Week 4: Trial

It's dawn when the Sergeant calls everyone to the courtroom. Despite the early hour, the tribunes of the room are as full as the last two times, sleepy townspeople glaring and looking at the visitors with distrust. The Sergeant told everyone to get to their spots. Anyone who looks behind them, will see the bailiffs carrying Sting Eucliffe away, who is trying to resist them but doesn't seem to have enough strength to do that well.

"Don't worry about him. That guy ate a lot of ice and frost for reasons I don't understand, and now he has a very bad cold. I don't want him making everyone in this room sick, so he's excused. No, that's not a hint all of you should get sick to avoid these trials."

There are more podiums draped in black now. Clarisse, Eric Lecarde, and Jughead Jones have joined the dead, and their podiums look lonely without their occupants.

With a twirl of the gavel, the Sergeant recites:

"Today the trial will focus on solving the murder of..."

He takes a PDA out of his pocket, and holds it in the air. The PDA's text-to-voice software says: 'Forsythe'

"...Pendleton Jones the Third. The circumstances need no introduction, we all are aware of them. Here are your suspects"

            
Once everyone had a moment to see the faces in the photos, the Sergeant adds:

"By the way, there are two separate culprits today. Yes, two of these five people directly caused Jughead's death. When it's time to vote, remember to vote for two different people."

Let the trial begin.

Yes. Someone had written "Jughead woz he," I assume the victim. "Woz" was spelled W-O-Z.

So he was killed in the middle of writing it...do you think it might have been an attempt at giving us a coded clue?

It may have been. I could not say either way.

Maybe. It sounds like it's a little short, though, don't you think?

Maybe it was more going for "Jughead woz here." Makes more sense to be something you'd spray paint, anyway.

I don't think there would be a point in just saying that, though. It wouldn't take any longer to spell was the right way, would it?

It could simply have been personal preference.

He was a journalist. I don't think his preference would be to misspell anything. Unless... I mean, I guess the poison could have made him delirious. I don't know enough about poison to say.

I have been thinking-Dazai is the only living person here with a z in their name. Though I suppose you could say the oz sound has some assonance with Rose's name.

Dazai, stop making yourself look guiltier. It's not gonna work at this point and you're just gonna make Oda mad at you.

I mean, unless you like him being mad at you? I guess I can leave the room for that? But like, also, gross. Sakura and I are right here.

Making Odasaku mad is a bad idea, and that's a lesson everyone should take to heart. It's not easy to do, but if you manage it--

If he really wanted to implicate me he could have spelled it w a z. That would be more accurate, right?

It is also possible I misinterpreted the intended meaning. I could try to reproduce it, if needed.
