WEEK 0 — MARCH 29, 30

Week 0

You have been threatened by the Sergeant: if nobody dies before March 31st at noon, you, along with everyone else, will forfeit your lives. The Sergeant pushed everyone away from the Lodge, judging that had been enough interaction with his guests. So what now?

Will you submit to the Sergeant’s demands? Will you resist him and wait to see what happens? He wouldn’t be capable of killing you and everyone else, right?

Only time will tell.

The next day you'll find a newspaper at the motel lounge, telling you about today’s weather forecast with 100% accuracy. Looks like you can expect to find a newspaper every day to find out the weather and any other news about the town. It even includes something branded 'THE SHARK ALERT'. Who could that be directed to?

There's also a copy of yesterday's newspaper. There's nothing about the Sergeant or about your predicament, but there is something about your arrival to the town.

Cartesio is your world for the next four days, better make the most out of your time here.

[Bringing her sleeves to her eyes, she wipes away any tears that try to fall. She shouldn't cry. She needs to be strong.] Mm. [Nodding, she agrees wholeheartedly.] Yeah. We'll... find a better way, together. I want to believe in that.

[Sakura's gaze goes serious-- she might not be good at things like this, but she can try.] But he could be lying, right? About giving people their stuff back. [Just because he's showing it doesn't mean that he has to give it back, even if they do steal and thrash the place.]

DAY

[ it's a new concept: not having any responsibilities for once. no clan head to obey, no clan to consider, no meetings to attend, no school, no youkai. frankly, all matoba feels is acute boredom. which is why in the early to late afternoon, he spends his time at the outdoor shooting range by the weapon shop, idly practicing his archery. it's easy to pick up the almost rhythmic fwip and thud of his arrows - loud enough to catch someone's attention, but nothing near the level of a gunshot.

if you happen to approach, excuse him for shooting at the slightest hint of movement. don't worry; the arrow lands some scant inches by your feet. no harm done! that was clumsy of me or my mistake, he might say as he laughs lightly, waving off the accident. except it's clear he has excellent control over the bow because he's hit all the vital points on the dummy so far. he's more used to ceremonial bows, but this longbow he bought at the shop is good enough as a temporary replacement. and, well, he's only been doing this since childhood. ]


EVENING

[ what did he say to shuuichi-san once upon a time? that the effectiveness of cheap exorcist tools varied? look at him now, sitting in his room, idly drawing out protection and binding talismans with a thick black sharpie. it's an experiment. he's not sure they'll work, but the source of such blessings rarely has anything to do with how strong a person's spiritual powers are. it's all knowledge and technique, and matoba has plenty of both.

he leaves his door wide open, so anyone is welcome visit. maybe he'll even draw you a personal talisman. ]

We can't. But cooperation isn't the same as giving in. We don't want to make him unnecessarily angry.

[Her wavelength is spiking....it's not too out of control yet, though.]

What do you think we should do?

Are those talismans...? [she's speaking idly to herself as she peeks in, even though she knows it's kind of rude to]

I-- [She tenses up, just a little bit. Her hands close tightly around each other and she's trembling as she shakes her head. This is too much for her.] I don't know. I just... I don't think...

Hmm. I wonder if the other residents of the town are getting the full story or if the Sergeant is, perhaps, massaging the truth a bit?

Indeed. Are you familiar with them at all?

[ obviously she recognizes them, but it would be useful to have another person who knows what they're doing. ]

ice cream parlor!!

Excited over ice cream? You're quite simple, aren't you?

[ this other child is definitely not stopping anyone from anything in this shop. ]

Do you mean how many weapons we're allowed? It's an impressive collection, to be sure.

Mechanical, eh? Sounds like a special kind of robot to me, then.

[ Interesting in a different set of way to him -- he was legitimately thinking of something less than ideal. That's what he gets for his imagination running around... ]

So, how does this linked thing work? Any wires involved?

[ How could someone live without trying sea salt ice cream. It was like a crime.

Ah... y-yes! Someone I care about very much uses them.

[ Everyone does, for sure!

Axel watches her swipe the card, not actually expecting her to do so. But he follows suit, because he was going to grab one himself anyway, and he watches her try it out before he gives his own a taste. He feels a sense of accomplishment when she mentions that she does like it...and easily he thinks back to two people he kind of misses. ]

See? Knew you'd like it. You should tell your friends too -- it tastes even better when you're having it with someone you know.

That's right, bucko.

[ Might as well be one... ]

Maybe one of the natives wised up to the existence of sharks like you did and started to fear for their lives. But if they don't know any better, they might think sharks could come from the sky or something like that.

[ Or are making fun of the shark guy. ]

[ Poor, innocent Sakura. Axel is sure that she, like the other kids, have no business being here. That being said...he's not going to mince too many words here. On this issue, anyway. ]

Well, yeah, of course.

But there's a chance he isn't, and that's something people will take. Someone's going to think, "Well, it's better than nothing...", know what I mean?

[ Axel gives the other male a stare at first...wahh, so serious. Except not, as he just snorts. ]

Your words sound like something a simple guy would say.

[ But hey, he's going to be swiping the card of his now. ]

Anyway, don't you have some kind of dessert or food you like the best?

[Who allowed this? Where are the babysitters?!]

Dunno! I didn't see anything in the rules, so I'm just goin' with as many as I can carry! Unless the plastic thingy runs out of mira first.

"Robot," huh? I don't really know that word, but if it's what works for you!

Nope, no wires! S'more like a psychic thing, except I'm not actually a psychic. But wouldn't that be awesome?!

Of course! Look at all their little fangs! They're grinning.

...It's alright to not know. It'd be weirder if you were sure, in a situation like this.

[But at the same time, they can't just focus on things they can't do. That's an easy way to get overwhelmed and lose all ability to move forward.]

...So, how about something simple? Even if it's just 'we should get ice cream', it's a place to start.

[ Alfin took another bite before answering. ]

I'll have our chef prepare it when I get home so I can eat it with my family!

[ She beamed brightly, though that light seemed to flicker for a moment. She had said 'when,' but it was really more of a question of if... ]

Perhaps someone trains them around here...? That's not really restricted to whether you're landlocked or not. Then again, I'm not sure if they even know what Pokeballs are here.

You would know. [ he glances at the ice cream choices available. ] Is there really a point in picking a single flavor or dessert?
