The Sergeant's deadline is tonight. An offer to get in contact with people you know, yet also a threat. Given how fed up he was, it's unlikely he's joking about the kind of cruelty he's willing to go through for the sake of getting what he wants.
That's why it may not be so surprising that, early in Friday morning, there's this air of tension, despite the bright sun in the sky. It doesn't help that a firetruck and a couple patrolcars race through the streets, passing in front of the motel and going west. The reason why is clear after a single glance:
There's a thick column of black smoke emanating from somewhere inside the Junkyard.
[What's going on here is that someone needs to be a bit more tidy. There's a trashcan attached to a column of the gas station, and there's a bit of something hanging over the rim]
...by the way, is there anything that smells off? Like a gasoline spill versus the normal smell of a gas station? He’s definitely keeping a nose out for that, all things considered.]
[It doesn't seem like anything was spilled here. There's the smell of gasoline in the air, but that's because it's a gas station. Nice?
A closer look to the trashcan shows it's already full, even though it's early in the day. Just from a glance you can find two items -- the one that's partly hanging, and a much larger object]
[You really may have to wash them carefully. The item you grabbed is an empty motor oil container. Nothing odd for a gas station, hm? Still...what's up with that?]
[This is the sort of situation that can drive a man to want to smoke, just to put a different scent of burning in his throat - so to hell with it, he'll go to the gas station and buy cigarettes and a lighter, and... might as well look around the actual building, while he's there.
Anything out of the ordinary, aside from whatever has Gant looking at that trash can? Does the clerk seem abnormally rattled?]
[Haha, your gloves are already dirty! But if it's any consolation, this won't stain them much further -- after all, although there's some blood peeking through the bits that are visible from the inside, most of it is inside the ball instead of the outside.
Good luck carrying this and the motor oil container, Gant, Eric. At least the motel laundry room is free, so there's that consolation if you get stains on you]
[Even John never tried to give him a nickname that undignified - and yet -
Gant has a point.]
Here.
[He had been handed his ill-advised coping mechanism in a bag, after all. It maybe only barely fits the can, or even only just fits over part of it, but....]

Looks like the trashcan is the only suspicious element here]

[THIS IS YOUR NAME NOW]
Do you want to go inside and see if you can get some bags for these? I don’t want to be carrying a can of motor oil around everywhere.

For starters, it seems to have been balled up so the sticky part is outside, concealing the inside]

...
...
Do you have gloves.
