Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

It'd be more convincing as a red herring if the bottles had been opened.

[But he's frowning, considering.]

If they were forced to use a back up plan and kill Katsuki in a messier way... you'd think they might've gone back to clean this up. Unless there was a reason they couldn't. Perhaps due to injuries.

That doesn't mean anything. Eric can heal injuries.

Wouldn't that make him an accomplice?

Do we know that there wasn't one?

[A beat.]

How likely is it that any of us on the suspect list could have seriously come out of the mess that Bakugou created without a single scratch?

[amburere]

[ That's a good point actually. But there's a lot they don't know about accomplices and suspects, he thinks. ] You any good at talking to the Sarge?

Doubt it. [ A beat. ] Unless they never let him gap close. He's not a long range fighter.

Suppose that might be why he went into the chapel.

[To try ad cut down on some of the advantage, maybe. But still. Not taking a single scratch even incidentally from all the debris inside the chapel? Hard to believe anyone's thaaaat good.

He's going to look over to the Sarge. The answer to Dabi's question, he'll soon find out is no.]

Hey, you. There any kind of rule against getting someone to help you with a murder or clean up? Do they get anything out of it from you?

[cartesio]

[ The Sergeant glances back at him. ]

There's no rule against it. But there's nothing anyone would get from it, either.

[ He shrugs. ]

I didn't get involved in this. I'd mind the time, if I were you, instead of going off on tangents.

[quickpersuader]

In this case however, since someone was killed, that means none of our secrets will be revealed- right?

[cartesio]

Didn't you listen when I said that on Tuesday? Yes, nothing will be revealed.

[quickpersuader]

Then an accomplice could get two things out of this:

One, if they were friends with the culprit, they could help them get away with it and frame someone else.

Two, they could assist with a murder to fulfill the conditions for the motive without getting their own hands dirty directly.

One more question, Sergeant: if there was an accomplice, would they definitely be put on the suspect list?

[cartesio]

Anyone involved with the crime will be listed as a suspect. Naturally, accomplices are included alongside the culprit, but only the killer counts as the correct answer.

[doublelammy]

[Muttering:]

Who would want to listen to you when you lie?

[But not gonna start a fight in the courtroom, not gonna make herself any more of a nuisance than that.]

Pretend I wasn't running around in the woods for the last few hours and saw this on time, please?

You think I'd be party to not only destroying a church, but killing someone while doing it?!

I don't think Clarisse saw a point in cleaning it up. Going back to the junkyard would mean going out of her way again and the only way it ties to her is profiling.

[marmoron]

Point.

You really can't decide if I'm a genius or an idiot, can you? If you're going to try to drive the point home that I'm so good at this, you're pretty dumb to start arguing that I was too lazy to clean up after myself.

[unfashionably]

... I don't know why you're insulting yourself here. You're the one who didn't clean up, if you have a better reason for why then you should just tell us.

[snideper]

[EYE ROLL OF THE CENTURY]

I didn't clean up because there was nothing for me to clean up after, you moron; I didn't do it.
