Week 4: Trial

It's dawn when the Sergeant calls everyone to the courtroom. Despite the early hour, the tribunes of the room are as full as the last two times, sleepy townspeople glaring and looking at the visitors with distrust. The Sergeant told everyone to get to their spots. Anyone who looks behind them, will see the bailiffs carrying Sting Eucliffe away, who is trying to resist them but doesn't seem to have enough strength to do that well.

"Don't worry about him. That guy ate a lot of ice and frost for reasons I don't understand, and now he has a very bad cold. I don't want him making everyone in this room sick, so he's excused. No, that's not a hint all of you should get sick to avoid these trials."

There are more podiums draped in black now. Clarisse, Eric Lecarde, and Jughead Jones have joined the dead, and their podiums look lonely without their occupants.

With a twirl of the gavel, the Sergeant recites:

"Today the trial will focus on solving the murder of..."

He takes a PDA out of his pocket, and holds it in the air. The PDA's text-to-voice software says: 'Forsythe'

"...Pendleton Jones the Third. The circumstances need no introduction, we all are aware of them. Here are your suspects"

            
Once everyone had a moment to see the faces in the photos, the Sergeant adds:

"By the way, there are two separate culprits today. Yes, two of these five people directly caused Jughead's death. When it's time to vote, remember to vote for two different people."

Let the trial begin.

Yes. They’re something I don’t leave without.

And how much do you know about poison?

[odasaku]

Not a lot. I’ve never used it.

Do you know enough to tell whether somebody's taken a fatal dose?

[odasaku]

Not really. That’s different for every poison, right? It’d be too many signs for me to remember.

[ hes not the smartest cookie, alright? ]

Alright.

[She files that away, moving on.]

Your... seeing the future thing in the guestbook. Does it work here, or can you not use it like most people and their weird powers?

[odasaku]

I don’t know. My ability only works when I’m in danger and, well, I haven’t been in any so far.

[ oops? ]

...That's a weirdly specific superpower, but sure.

[She frowns.]

You're a pretty good marksman, right? So if you tried to shoot someone, it would've been a more direct hit than what happened to him.

[odasaku]

I’ve given up on trying to think about the mechanics.

[ because there’s no explanation in bsd. it just Is. ]

Yes. If it had been me, I wouldn’t have needed more than one shot to kill him.

Would that still have been the case if you were, like... Surprised or emotional or whatever?

[odasaku]

Yeah. I have enough experience to...put my feelings aside.

[robitussin]

...I swear there's a point to me asking this, but - did you know him well enough to know his parents weren't in the picture?

[odasaku]

I didn’t, no.

[ if she’s going to accUSE HIM OF ORPHAN MURDER ]

[robitussin]

...Okay. Then I don't have any more questions.

[It's fine, orphan murder accusations have been narrowly avoided!!]
