Week 4: Trial

It's dawn when the Sergeant calls everyone to the courtroom. Despite the early hour, the tribunes of the room are as full as the last two times, sleepy townspeople glaring and looking at the visitors with distrust. The Sergeant told everyone to get to their spots. Anyone who looks behind them, will see the bailiffs carrying Sting Eucliffe away, who is trying to resist them but doesn't seem to have enough strength to do that well.

"Don't worry about him. That guy ate a lot of ice and frost for reasons I don't understand, and now he has a very bad cold. I don't want him making everyone in this room sick, so he's excused. No, that's not a hint all of you should get sick to avoid these trials."

There are more podiums draped in black now. Clarisse, Eric Lecarde, and Jughead Jones have joined the dead, and their podiums look lonely without their occupants.

With a twirl of the gavel, the Sergeant recites:

"Today the trial will focus on solving the murder of..."

He takes a PDA out of his pocket, and holds it in the air. The PDA's text-to-voice software says: 'Forsythe'

"...Pendleton Jones the Third. The circumstances need no introduction, we all are aware of them. Here are your suspects"

            
Once everyone had a moment to see the faces in the photos, the Sergeant adds:

"By the way, there are two separate culprits today. Yes, two of these five people directly caused Jughead's death. When it's time to vote, remember to vote for two different people."

Let the trial begin.

[Okay look, Keith's getting real tired of this bullshit. Jughead's dead thanks to not one but two assholes and his space wolf is probably unhappy with being locked out of the courthouse.]

Here's how it looks as far as I'm concerned. Culprit 1 cooked a poisoned burger knowing Jughead would eat it. Culprit 2 shot Jughead three times in chest, didn't hit anything important and was probably inexperienced with guns. Don't know if they were working together or not, but I'm guessing they were because Jughead wasn't the easiest person to go after this week. I'll say this outright.

Of the people on that suspect list: Rose and Frasier are the only two who look like they don't have any experience with guns. Both of you were in the variety show Jughead put on. Both of you have either handprints or footprints that could be a match for the ones found at the park and pharmacy.

Frasier, you're a doctor. You'd know what those drugs from the pharmacy would do. Rose, you're old as hell and you're probably banking a little on nobody getting in your face about this. Talk.

Rose has also admitted she purchased a gun for self defense, even though she doesn't know how to use one.

[Just. Gonna add that there.]

Did she tell you what kind of gun she purchased?

She couldn't tell what kind it was, because she just chose one at random. She said it didn't look like the one from this case, but...

[Who wants to admit to that?]

That's convenient.

Additionally, it seems Mr. Crane is familiar with cooking gourmet food, but avoids greasy ones - like burgers, I'm assuming.

[duckrotation]

[EXCUSE ME KEITH??? SHE MAY BE OF GRANDMA AGE BUT SHE'S NOT ANCIENT???]

I'm only 55!

...Shouldn't you be more concerned that he's accusing you of murder?

[duckrotation]

I would be, but I didn't do it. You're all conspiring to frame me, aren't you? Planning to kill off the old woman, one of the easiest targets.

[robitussin]

[There's a pause, in which her expression grows angrier.]

Actually, I'm just trying to figure out who killed my... Who killed him. So I'd really like you to answer Keith instead of wasting time getting offended.

Well, technically, if you were the easiest target, you’d be the one who got shot.

The easiest targets to frame for murder would be those we know have killed in the past.

[He could kind of care less how young he thinks you are, Rose.....]

You're a murder suspect. What's this about a gun that you bought while you were here?

[duckrotation]

I bought it to hide under my pillow in case anyone tried to hurt me during the night.

What kind of gun is it.

You got at least 10 years on the oldest person I know...

What? It's true.

The issue is that as a doctor, I would have gone for a much more...obscure poison than literal cyanide. As someone in the field of psychiatry, I still know about appropriate dosages and medications that are much less overt.

If you picked something more obscure that would have made it all the more obvious it had to be someone with more specialized knowledged. Would've been harder to cover your tracks.

If you’ll allow me to rebuttal, I respectfully disagree. If I were to possess the mindset of a killer, I would have picked something that would be virtually untraceable by taste and scent, versus perhaps the most obvious poison.

I don’t disagree with the line of questioning, but coming into it with “you knew what the poisons would do” when that poison is cyanide. Well. It’s a bit weak.

The poison powder on the cheeseburger was odorless, actually. And the only reason I managed to smell the cyanide was because I had no problem with getting close to his mouth.

Actually, can I ask how long it's been since you went into psychiatry?

As covered during Frasier Crane Trivia Night, 21 years. I worked in Boston in private practice for about...10 or so years on and off. I now host a call-in radio show in Seattle, which I have done for a good 9 and a half years.

Okay. Did you ever practice general medicine, or did you go straight into psychiatry?
