WEEK 0 — MARCH 29, 30

Week 0

You have been threatened by the Sergeant: if nobody dies before March 31st at noon, you, along with everyone else, will forfeit your lives. The Sergeant pushed everyone away from the Lodge, judging that had been enough interaction with his guests. So what now?

Will you submit to the Sergeant’s demands? Will you resist him and wait to see what happens? He wouldn’t be capable of killing you and everyone else, right?

Only time will tell.

The next day you'll find a newspaper at the motel lounge, telling you about today’s weather forecast with 100% accuracy. Looks like you can expect to find a newspaper every day to find out the weather and any other news about the town. It even includes something branded 'THE SHARK ALERT'. Who could that be directed to?

There's also a copy of yesterday's newspaper. There's nothing about the Sergeant or about your predicament, but there is something about your arrival to the town.

Cartesio is your world for the next four days, better make the most out of your time here.

[ Oh yeah, definitely. ]

Because right now we're narrowing down a bit. A typical guy can only stomach so much food at one time.

[ Dramatic pause. ]

Unless there's something unique about you that you want to share with the class.

[How flimsily is the wall? Enough to bend when this person puts some weight on it?

Could they just burst through them?]

[ She's a princess. Princesses must think about the long-term benefits else their kingdom go up in smoke. If she can prevent the fire from expanding, it will be easier to recover from even if some of the citizen's houses get torched. But if the fire expands, there will be more damage than if it remains central to this area. Where this Erebonia, she would make certain the people affected by her choice would be properly recompensed... As it is, she can only pray for their forgiveness. ]

The one in the park. We'll handle the one on the streets.

[ here's matoba arriving late to the scene, and probably the only person still smiling about everything. he doesn't look worried at all, but someone's gotta stay cool and fresh here. he waves cheerfully to nagisa when he hears his call, nods to show him that he understands, and then eyes the fire. oya, what an impressive fire. and it's heading right for him and the park, so he should do something about it, he supposes. ]

Well, it is my job as an exorcist to protect people. [ tossing that comment out like it's an afterthought.

he breaks off a sturdy branch from one of the trees and starts... drawing in the dirt path? first a large circle, about 6 feet in diameter. then, quickly a large one around that. split into sections. squiggles that look more like symbols than they do words. finally a bigger symbol in the middle, what looks to be a spiral around three hugging commas - the mitsu tomoe. the entire process takes mere minutes.

then he's off again to draw one, two more so that in the end, there are three arrays in a row, pointing at the approaching fire. binding seals, meant to slow down the fire and buy them time. ] These should help, but they won't hold up for long once the fire is here.

[cartesio]

Understood, boss. The park it'll be.

[The connection is cut.

It takes a few minutes, but after a while the faraway noise of a plane approaches, until it's louder than the noise of the fire trying to consume everything. For a moment the shadow of a plane covers the place while it goes towards the park. If Alfin and anyone looks up, they'll manage to see a bright plane, crossing over the park. When it approaches the junkyard, a spray of foam falls from it, floating down to the raging fire.

Anyone who is near the junkyard can see how the foam crash onto the fire, showing to be rather effective. The flames it touches are almost smothered immediately, the foam stays there. Surely it'll be evaporate during the day, and even if more fire were to get there, it wouldn't be able to get past the foam.

The foam reaches all the way to the junkyard, so the only fires left are those on the streets near the motel.

Well done, the park is safe. The oppressive heat is gone, all that's left is the sun and the breeze that's still all over the town. Take a moment to breathe, you deserve it.]

[paciscere]

[ now that's an answering he isn't expecting. ]

A magician using paper talismans? Ah - [ he waves a hand dismissively ] - it's not that I don't believe you. I just didn't think magicians ever used this short of thing. Witches, perhaps.

[alfin]

[ Alfin breathes a soft sigh before switching the mic over to the police. ]

Prepare to receive evacuees.

[ She gives them a moment to reply, and only a moment. ]

[cartesio]

[Matoba's actions may have saved the park. Almost as soon as he finishes the symbols, the fire seems to be deterred, it's not advancing as quickly as before. It was only matter of time until something was done.

Thankfully, something was done. A couple streets away, Alfin managed to arrange the Cartesio public services to do something useful. The foam covers the fire, flakes of it fall around Matoba and into the park. The heat is gone in a moment, for the first time since the day started, it feels like things aren't going to be as bad as they seemed before.

Still, there's the fire on the streets left, almost consuming the townspeople's houses. Sakura is helping with a fire extinguisher over there, and Waver is trying to organize people so they don't get hurt]

You see, I have something called a fast metabolism. I guess you could call it a matobalism, haha.

[ which would be funny (or not) if axel even knew his name. ]

Do you need me to explain it?

[cartesio]

[It's as if the gods heard you, Nagisa. Alfin's intervention saved the park!

Still, you're right in that the way the fire moves is odd. The way it's along the streets...there must be a cause for this.

Perhaps once everything's over you'll be able to find something about why this all happened? With some luck you will]

[Another inidentifiable voice crackles through the console. This thing needs better sound quality]

On it!

[Short and sweet. It sounds like it'd take a while for the police to arrive. Who knows how long they'll take, but at least you can be certain they'll get there at some point]

[cartesio]

[The cubicle walls seems to be barely held together, like with enough strength you could even move it. You could burst through it! It's going to make noise and alert anyone who is in this place, but you definitely could do that]

[doublelammy]

Ummm... the Erebonian Empire? On the Zemurian continent? [She tilts her head.] Where are you from? 'Cause none of those sound familiar to me.

[alfin]

[ Finaly, finally Alfin connects the mic to the megaphone as was her original plan. ]

Citizens of Cartesio! We have established a safe location for you to evacuate to! If you are not helping put out the fire, head to the police station! There are police on the way to help guide you to the station, and give you any aide you might need. Please go in a calm and orderly fashion! I repeat! We have established a safe location for you to evacuate to!...

[ She repeats her message a few times, making sure that everyone hears it. ]

Like three of these before Jusis said I had to stop and refused to buy me any more.

[She is so proud of this.]

I totally coulda eaten more, though.

[paciscere]

[ well, he's not going to go put out the fire. but, here, sakura, have a simple fire ward talisman. he holds it out to her, and will offer the same to anyone else going out there. it might help, it might not. at the very most, it'll make the heat somewhat bearable. ]

Keep this fire ward on you, and try not to be too eager to run in.

[ good luck, good luck. ]

[ huh, interesting. ]

There's no such continent where I'm from, and to my knowledge, there never has been. You're not lying, are you?

Aw, really? That sucks. I wish you could meet my friends! I swear, they never learn.

[She puts her hands behind her head.]

Got anything I can use for the smashing part of this? 'Cause I have totally got the smashing part of this if you do.

[cartesio]

[It takes some effort to get anyone to listen to her. Those who notice who is talking see someone who definitely isn't a fireman nor isn't authorized to order them around.

Then again...who'd stick close to a fire to risk getting hurt? Even if it seems many townspeople didn't trust Alfin's instructions, at least they're leaving the immediate area of danger.

Someone approaches, though. Maybe Alfin will recognize him as the man that owns the flower shop]

What's up with the fire? You know anything about this?

It gets easier the more you do it. [ practice makes perfect, etc ] The Earth I know only has seven main continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. I'm from Asia, specifically the country of Japan.

Oooh. Now we're really super-official!

[They look over the note quickly.]

...Huh. "Ask to," though? Sounds like we might if we're lucky.

[alfin]

[ Well.. That's all she can ask for. She hops out of the firetruck before answering the man. ]

I'm sorry, I don't. I haven't been here long. Now that people are evacuating, I'm going to try to find out more about what's going on.

[ She did recognize the man from her visit to the flower shop yesterday. They hadn't spoken, but she had lingered in his shop long enough to recognize him. ]

Are you going to head to your shop instead of the police station? I can drop by later to let you know if I find anything out.

Sure. Anything is. But you still gotta put in the work. If there's something I gotta lie about, I'd rather just punch whatever's causing the problem.

[Not the most solid of strategies, but it's hers.]

...Yeah, um. None of those are familiar to me. ...Oh! Asia and Japan, kind of! There are a couple people here from there! But those aren't places where I'm from.
