Final Investigation

It's Friday. It's the last day marked in your calendar. Presumably, the few without medals will leave at some point today, and the rest...you're not sure what'll happen to you, but it'll be what the Sergeant wants.

How to defy him when you have so little time left?

Whatever plan you had today, it's guaranteed it won't go like expected. Early in the morning, the ground rumble slightly, and something pops in the sky. Fireworks! One after another, blasts from firework spread through the sky. Many of the residents of Cartesio come to the street, gathering and making all the noise they can.

It's a very radical change of behavior, compared to the once peaceful demeanor they had, and then the hostile behavior showed towards the visitors, but now they're making hubbub and causing disorder. Everyone does it spontaneously, and nobody's approaching the motel at all.

At least none of the townspeople.

Not long after that started, you may hear the noise of horns and whistles from vehicles, right outside the motel. Go take a look?

[ Isn't treasure expected to be found, in ruined rooms? Like the ones the others found, walking down the corridor, this room looks like it's old and musty, cracks in the walls and floor.

Also like those rooms, the monitor mounted on the wall shows an identical room. Unlike those rooms, this one seems to have a purpose besides general sitting room: it's a bedroom/study. ]

[Well, then! Let's go to see what is there to study in the study]

[ Probably most notably is how the bed doesn't appear to be used. The room's wreck, but this bed just seems like it's never been touched. Weird? ]

[pecker]

[Then the task falls upon Niwa to touch it. She was actually thinking more about the study materials, but this bed is just too pristine to ignore compared to all the other musty grossness.

So!! Let's unmake the bed. Anything under the sheets or in the pillowcases? How about the mattress?]

[cartesio]

[ Absolutely nothing! ...Sorry, Niwa, when we say never been touched we mean never been touched. ]

[pecker]

[Well now she kind of feels silly. She's just going to bundle up this stuff and pretend she's stealing it... maybe actually steal it. Who knows what the condition the place they'll stay in after this is in, at least these are clean.

But before that, she'll go back to her actual point of interest, the study materials!! What the heck is in here]

[cartesio]

[ Good choice! She'll find...a lot of computer science-y things, some physics papers. Books and papers on genetics.

Among all that, there's a photograph. It's of a bunch of people in lab coats. You can't quite tell just what they look like, because all the faces have been scribbled out. ]

[pecker]

Someone wanted you guys to be forgotten, hm?

[Turning over the picture, anything on the back?]

[cartesio]

[ Nothing. That'd defeat the point of the scribbles, wouldn't it? ]

[pecker]

[Depends on how dramatic the scribbler is feeling, really.

But instead we can see what their feelings on genetics are......]

[ Positive, as much as you can gather. There's no notes, just books. It's all incredibly dense stuff, but there's quite a bit on the science of the brain, something about radial images, and how to take them. Good brain scan information. ]

[pecker]

[She's skimming these now, then.]

Wooow, this is really boring... can't one of you flip the bookcase around and lead us to the parallel room?

[cartesio]

[ Alas, she'll find no revolving bookshelves here...but, maybe there's something important-looking that'll spark her interest?

It's a handheld device, with a keyboard. Some kind of PDA. ]

[pecker]

[Oh ho! Where was this hiding? Can she use it? She'll look for the power button if it seems usable.]

[cartesio]

[ It's got a power button! It actually turns on!

...But it requires...a password. Heck. ]

[pecker]

[Meh... Niwa is pretty good at breaking into stuff like this, but she's feeling lazy. She's gonna procrastinate on this and look around the rest of the room, maybe start shoving some books into pillowcases in case one of these has something useful for it.]

[cartesio]

[ As she's shoving, there's one more thing that she'll find kind of out-of-place, here. It's a mini-fridge next to the desk. ]

[pecker]

[Well no one ever used the bed, so she's kind of doubting there's food in here... is this a Science Fridge. She's going to open it and look for Science.]

[cartesio]

[ Niwa is not one to get her hopes up, huh? That's probably helpful here.

There's nothing in this fridge. It's not even cold. ]

[pecker]

... Could've been worse.

[Well, she'll just close that again, she guesses. Was it even plugged in...?]

[cartesio]

[ Yeah, it seems to be plugged in. Just no power going to it...or anything but the lights. ]

[pecker]

[The lights and the monitor, correct?

... Thinking about that, she's going to take a closer look at that monitor to see if anything is up with it besides the obvious.]
