WEEK 2: April 8th - April 12th

Second Week

Seven days have passed. Quite peaceful days, almost too peaceful. The town has welcomed you, excited to see tourists for the first time in many, many, many years. Some may have liked the peace, others may have been annoyed by it, but it was undeniable Cartesio seemed like such a nice and safe place it was hard to believe you had been told to kill each other.

But the threat is still up in the air. What's more: how much patience does the Sergeant have left?

Every time you take a look into the Lodge, you see the Sergeant. Lately he's looking more and more annoyed. Even though you can't see his face, you can feel he's getting frustrated. How long will it be before he lashes out and does something about these peaceful days?

Nobody in the town could suspect the harrowing times that'd befall Cartesio.

When you wake up on Sunday, you'll find new maps in the map rack and brochures on the table, showing places you hadn't noticed in the town before. Enjoy!

...Not sure. I still have no idea how that guy thinks.

[Because getting an idea would involve interacting with him, and he already hates most people. He can't stand this particular one.]

Maybe it's a...testament to it. A legacy. Or a warning.

[robitussin]

Like a psychopath with no regard for human life, for starters, but there are probably ten other descriptors I could go for.

[After another thoughtful pause, though, she shakes her head.]

I'm not sure it was his decision, anyways. He basically admitted to me he takes orders from someone.

[burgerprince]

You two had a heart to heart? What was that like?

[robitussin]

[Immediately, she shakes her head, frowning.]

Ugh, it wasn't a heart to heart. Don't make me puke. It was basically me asking him random shit and him refusing to answer most of it but then realizing he told me too much and kicking me out.

[burgerprince]

Makes sense he's answering to someone, he doesn't sound smart enough to run this operation by himself.

[A complete idiot who likes violence with too much power. It can only go well.]

You find out anything else?

[robitussin]

Definitely not smart enough, and probably way too hotheaded, too.

[She nods, though.]

He has a way to contact whoever his boss is, and they might be hidden somewhere here in the city. Not sure about that last one, though. It's a theory in progress. Also, he's as clueless as we are about some things in this town. That's about all I got.

[burgerprince]

With the same disappearing act as all the buildings round here?

[It checks out.]

What's he clueless on?

[robitussin]

...Might be. It could be worth it to ask people if they've heard of anyone named Major or Colonel.

[She looks thoughtful for a moment.]

He said he didn't know everything about this town. Like, he only knew about the new locations when he had to make new maps.

[burgerprince]

Thanks for volunteering.

[A wry smile.]

You'd think he'd at least know where everything is.

[robitussin]

Oh, is that what you heard?

[A smirk, before she nods.]

Yeah. I'm thinking maybe he's just, like, a figurehead? Not someone who makes decisions about this place on his own, or who has any real authority.

[burgerprince]

The plot thickens.

[He crosses his arms with a grin.]

I wonder how deep the rabbit hole goes.

[robitussin]

[A shrug.]

Deep enough to cover two months, I guess. Or I'm going to be real bored pretty soon.

[burgerprince]

[There’s a grin.]

Fancy yourself an investigator?

[robitussin]

I fancy myself getting out of here alive, and it seems like knowing as much as possible will help with that.

[She tilts her head, though, glancing at him.]

I'm not the one who has it listed on my miniature biography, though.

[burgerprince]

See, you're doing a great job already.

[He folds his arms.]

I've dabbled in it.

[robitussin]

...Thanks, I guess.

[She moves past that after a moment, expression curious.]

Yeah? When was that?

[burgerprince]

Shortly before coming here. Small-town murder kind of deal.

[A shrug.]

[robitussin]

And you were investigating it instead of the police because...?

[There's a healthy dose of skepticism in her voice.]

[burgerprince]

Because the force of the police has nothing on teenage sleuths.

[robitussin]

...I can't tell if you're serious or not, and that deeply concerns me.

[burgerprince]

What if I told you we found the real culprit when the cops didn't?

[robitussin]

Then I would be both impressed and even more deeply concerned.

[But, because she's curious:]

What happened?

[burgerprince]

If you want to know that, you might need to sit down. It's a long story.

[robitussin]

...There aren't exactly any chairs here, and I feel like if I sit on the floor it's going to cave in. I mean, we could head to the diner, but I'm not sure if you're finished in here.

[burgerprince]

Walking and talking it is.

[He can do that, examine this place and narrate at the same time.]
