Second Week

Seven days have passed. Quite peaceful days, almost too peaceful. The town has welcomed you, excited to see tourists for the first time in many, many, many years. Some may have liked the peace, others may have been annoyed by it, but it was undeniable Cartesio seemed like such a nice and safe place it was hard to believe you had been told to kill each other.

But the threat is still up in the air. What's more: how much patience does the Sergeant have left?

Every time you take a look into the Lodge, you see the Sergeant. Lately he's looking more and more annoyed. Even though you can't see his face, you can feel he's getting frustrated. How long will it be before he lashes out and does something about these peaceful days?

Nobody in the town could suspect the harrowing times that'd befall Cartesio.

When you wake up on Sunday, you'll find new maps in the map rack and brochures on the table, showing places you hadn't noticed in the town before. Enjoy!

Couldn't you just, like... find a new job, or something? You don't have to stay there, do you?

[She shakes her head.]

Maybe if I were Lechter or Claire. But for me, this isn't really a job I can quit.

Y'don't really get too much of a choice when that's what you were made n' bought for.

[...Oh.]

—What?

...Oh. You're one of the people that doesn't know yet.

[She continues, absently poking at her pancakes.]

I'm not a regular human like the rest of you guys. I was made in a workshop, and then Gramps bought me. I'm literally made to be an Ironblood. That's why I can link with Lammy, too.

But I also literally belong to Gramps, n' I know things he wants kept secret. So if I were to leave, I think it'd either be in a body bag or with a memory wipe.

Couldn't you, like... run away or something?

Gramps is the Chancellor of the Empire, with the entire Imperial Army at his command if he wanted to use it.

You really think I'm gonna get anywhere?

I guess not, but... I mean, he brought all of us here from really different places. You could probably hitch a ride out.

...Sure, but then I never get to see Jusis or Rean or anyone else again.

I'm okay with doing missions, if it means I can keep my promise to meet up with all of them again.

Yeah, but... You'd have a ton more freedom to make new friends, and get a chance to be normal.

Yeah, but... I don't really want new friends. I like—

[She pauses, considering her words.]

No. I love them. It's been bad enough going back to the way things used'ta be back in Erebonia, but if I had to keep on going knowing I was never ever gonna see 'em again... I think that might be too much.

...You're really okay with that?

[She can't picture herself accepting it that easily. Somehow, there's a little bit of respect for that kind of loyalty.]

They're my most important people in the world.

So... yeah. Yeah, I am.

[There is no uncertainty to be found here.]

[The only uncertainty, it seems, is Natalie's; she still looks a little bewildered, but she tries to move past that to respond.]

Well, that's... good, then.

[She looks like she wants to say something else, but in the end, what comes out of her mouth is:]
