WEEK 3: April 15th - April 19th

Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

diner

[doublelammy]

[Millium does not attend the execution. In fact, Millium spends her time between leaving the cell and the diner in her room at the motel. Sleep comes and goes.

Millium can't spend all day cooped up in her room, though. Eventually, her stomach starts growling at her to actually do something about it, so it's off to the diner with her.

She initially grabs food to go, but she pauses when she catches Oda out of the corner of her eye.

She doesn't say anything before simply sliding into a seat across from him, opening her little to-go container to produce a sandwich.]

Hi.

[She speaks up only because she feels like she should say something. This time, at least, she understands the tightness in her chest, but it doesn't change her from wanting to speak to try to remedy it even a little.]

[odasaku]

[ and here's another one of the people oda wanted to avoid at all costs. but, not wanting to sacrifice his food in favor of running away, he lets her sit down in front of him.

he keeps his gaze away, her unenthusiastic greeting not helping the guilt he feels.

nevertheless, he nods in response. ]

Hey.

[doublelammy]

[She takes a bite of her sandwich and actually chews and swallows before responding. She'll be polite today...]

...You don't have to keep not looking at me like that. I'm not mad at you for any of this.

[Just going for the heart of it.]

[odasaku]

I didn't think that.

[ yes he absolutely did ]

[doublelammy]

Then why won't you look at me?

I know I'm kind of a mess today, but I'm not that bad.

[odasaku]

[ well...there's no way to fight back against that.

oda sighs, and looks at her. ]

You caught me. [ he shrugs ] I guess I just...thought you'd be angry.

[doublelammy]

[She shakes her head quietly.]

I mean... I'm not happy it happened. Obviously. But... well, if someone had t'do it, then at least with you or Kino it'd be quick. Couldn't trust Sarge or Clarisse with that.

[She pauses to take another nibble of her sandwich, swallowing again before speaking.]

'Sides... I know it's not like you like doing this. I read the guestbook.

[odasaku]

Guess you're right.

[ oda had thought the same thing the moment he volunteered. he didn't want kino to do it in order to protect him, and he didn't want clarisse or the sergeant to make nine suffer any more than he deserved. ]

Mm, yeah. It's not something anyone should like. Life's important.

[doublelammy]

[She's quiet for a long moment at that.]

...hey, Oda?

Maybe... maybe not right now, I know everything's still really heavy, but. At some point... do you think you can explain that to me?

Why life's important.

[It's an odd request, and she knows it, but... not understanding keeps hurting Osomatsu, it hurt Cian. She doesn't know if she can grasp it, but maybe hearing it from someone who does matter a little will make sense of it.]

[odasaku]

[ oda's eyes widen in surprise when she asks him such a question. why would she ask someone like him...?

oda doesn't really understand it. but he doesn't want to let her down... even if it might just be an empty promise. ]

Yeah. I'll do my best.

[doublelammy]

[Because this makes Oda so obviously sad, he must understand it, in Millium's mind. And from what Millium knows of Oda, he's willing to talk to her without getting too angry with her for being, well, herself.

If she's going to learn this, she needs to learn from someone with patience.]

I know it's a weird thing to ask about, but...

[odasaku]

Is it?

[ oda blinks, tilting his head slightly ]

[doublelammy]

...At least, other people here make it sound like it is?

[Now she's doubting herself.]

It's just hard for me, 'cause I don't see things the same way as everyone else does, I guess. Unless I know somebody, seein' 'em dead is just... I guess it's supposed to be sad? But I don't really feel anything at all.

And... I think that's probably better, for my job. But Rean seemed proud of me back at the academy when I started feeling things like this, so... I wanna learn.

Him being proud of me, not making other people here that I like upset... that means more to me than doin' a good job for Gramps.
