WEEK 3: April 15th - April 19th

Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

[That gets a raised eyebrow.]

I thought this whole death penalty thing was normal for this place. Seemed a bit harsh.

[And much too fast. He wasn't there for the proceedings, he doesn't know exactly how any of what happened in the trial and what came after it was presented. Something to go bug people about later, he supposes.]

Is there really nothing you guys can do to stop it? Cartesio's your home.

[cartesio]

What? No! God, no, we believe in...in due process, and all that.

[ Really, the thought of it all makes him pale. He hesitates. ]

Everything like that... Seems outta our hands, in a way.

[marmoron]

"In a way" .....meaning?

[It's a careful question; Mason's already plenty upset from the looks of it and Keith isn't trying to make it worse. He still hasn't asked for his favor yet....]

[cartesio]

[ And then, Mason shakes his head. ]

I'm just- just too busy thinking about all that. Don't mind me, what do I even know? [ A laugh. Forced. ] All I do's sell stuff, around here.

[marmoron]

[Keith attempts an encouraging smile. Lord help us all]

I'd like to hear it anyway.

[cartesio]

Really, it's nothing. I'm sure... If we just let it die down, everything'll go back to normal. No need to make waves.

[marmoron]

[Got some real bad news for you, Mason....]

Probably just the soldier in me talking, but sometimes you gotta fight to get things to go back to normal. If people getting executed without due process in your town isn't enough reason to start causing waves, I dunno what would be.

[cartesio]

[ He's quiet for a moment, and he sighs. ]

What...can I get for you today, Keith?

[ It seems he doesn't want to continue this line of conversation. ]

[marmoron]

Sorry. I say too much sometimes.

[There's a bit of a smile. Small modicum of self awarenes....]

Nothing crazy. I just wanted to know if you could show me where the library or the electronics store in town is. I can't find them.

[cartesio]

Oh. You know, you and that...kid, the one who likes camping both. Are all you tourists just...bad with direction?

[ It's a joke, but a weak one. He'll produce a map from behind the counter, and point at a place a block east and south of the cinema. ]

See? Library. Right there.

[ ...But, the spot he's pointing it has nothing marked on it, unlike the locations Keith knows and has been to. ]
