cartesianism | WEEK 3: April 15th

Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

[She sighs.]

That's if nobody does something idiotic, I guess.

[right... but judging by what happened with Nine...]

I dunno, that's askin' a lot from this bunch.

[She leans forward, resting an elbow on the table and her hand in her palm.]

Aren't you supposed to be the optimistic one out of the two of us?

Aren't you the one who told me t'be more realistic?

Yeah, but I don't think I was expecting it to take less than three weeks.

[that makes him laugh. he finishes off the last bit of alcohol in his mug, then pushes it away and pulls out his card]

A lot of shit's happened in a short amount of time. So, if I gotta change my outlook, then I will, if that's what'll keep me from bein' someone's kill.

[he really hasn't changed all that much, though]

[After a moment, she nods.]

...Well, good. I mean, about the whole keeping your guard up part. I'm glad.

Now if only I could get you to lighten up a bit! Then we'd both be perfect.

[She laughs despite herself, shaking her head.]

I am exactly the right amount of carefree.

[a laugh! that was good!]

If you say so. [he grins, and then sighs. the bartender comes to take his card so that he can pay for his drinks] It's probably better that you stay the way you are. At least while we're here.

Yeah. If everyone followed my lead and just stayed inside every night, it would be a lot safer here.

[A beat.]

Stayed inside every night and also didn't do anything stupid. That's an important addition.

[when the bartender returns Osomatsu's card, he slides out of his seat. he wobbles a bit, but ultimately can stand. can he walk, though, is the bigger question]

Man, staying inside sounds like a pain. I miss bein' at home when I could go out any time I wanted. [but he supposes he'll start heading back to the motel]

It’s not that bad.

[Staying inside, she means. Still, as soon as she sees him struggling to walk, she goes to his side.]

Please don’t fall over.

N-No promises.

[he winks at her, and then starts walking. it's a slow pace, and he's not moving in a straight line. but they'll get back to the motel. eventually]

If you trip and bust your head open, I’ll be mad.

[Which is why she keeps close enough to catch him if he should stumble as they head back.]

[aww, you really do care!]

Calm down, Nacchan! I'll be fine! [he says as he hiccups]

[Deadpan:]

Please never call me that again.

[it's a term of endearment. Osomatsu is a big fan of nicknames!

he laughs at her, still walking wobbly]

Fine, fine... But it'll always be there, for when you want it.

[A small pause, and then a quiet laugh of her own.]

You're so weird.

[it always feels like a victory when he gets her to laugh]

Eh, I've been called worse.

Well, that's not great, but at least you've got thick skin, I guess.

I try not t'let what other people think of me get to me. [whoa, there, almost fell over] S-sometimes, it doesn't work, but most of the times I'm okay.

[Instinctively, she reaches out to take his arm and steady him.]

That's a good way to tackle things, I guess.

[thank you, Natalie. they're almost back at the motel by now, at least]

Wh-what about you? You're pretty thick-skinned, too, right?

I don't care about, like, 95% of people, so it's pretty easy to be.

[Or so she says, at least.]
