Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

Well, they can't rely only on revivals to bring back fossil Pokemon, after all. It's still a somewhat expensive process. So you would want breeding pairs as well. Those eggs are much cheaper than a fresh revival.

Ah, I see!

...actually, wait, I'm not sure if I do. Are you saying they basically perform some sort of necromancy rather than just using their DNA to create clones?

[silvertongueheir]

Well...the process is more similar to cloning, but most of the time it only works once per fossil. The scientists who developed the method simply seem to prefer the term "revival." I also don't believe Gerard has any memories from his past, and he was brought back in his youngest form.

Oh, I see...

[HE DOESN'T, REALLY.]

Well, it's something truly remarkable, in any case. That sort of thing only exists in movies where I'm from.

[silvertongueheir]

You have movies about that kind of thing? Though from what you've said, it sounds like the revived animals in those movies are not as loyal or well-trained as Gerard.

Oh, definitely. The series I'm thinking of is about the dangers of trying to do science when you're more concerned with money than the potential consequences of it, so the prehistoric creatures breed out of control and cause a mess of things.

[silvertongueheir]

[He snorts a little, though he looks curious.] So they didn't assign them any handlers in the movies, then? Though I would think that necessary just to actually keep them alive as well.

[protectandselfserve]

Well, it was supposed to be a big ol' wildlife park instead of having them as individual pets or something along those lines. They were basically trying to make a zoo of formerly extinct creatures.

[silvertongueheir]

Right. I suppose the relationship between those creatures and humans is different from the relationship between humans and Pokemon. There is the Safari Zone back home, though even then some of the Pokemon there end up joining with Trainers.

I suppose I don't really have much of a reference for your end, but... I can sort of get it, I suppose. I'd say it resembled a safari on some level, actually...

[silvertongueheir]

[He nods.] I suppose that would be the best way to show off a collection of such creatures, too.

[protectandselfserve]

Yes, exactly. The idea is that they're in a habitat that would've resembled their original habitats, so it's like you're just watching wild ones.

[silvertongueheir]

Ah. So did they bring back plants from that time as well?

[protectandselfserve]

Nope! They did include some DNA from modern animals to fill in the holes, so that probably allowed them to eat modern plants.

[silvertongueheir]

[He nods.] Gerard had something similar done to give him an extra edge in battle. He has genetics from some of Palmer Breeders' finest stud Pokemon.

Oh, do they have dinosaur contests like those dog shows, then?

[silvertongueheir]

They're usually grouped by Type, but yes, he could certainly take gold in a Flying-type show, if he was so inclined. [He was shyer when he was younger, and their current circumstances leave less time to do stuff like that.]

Flying-type? So... what does that tend to include, other than birds and pre-bird dinosaurs?

[silvertongueheir]

They're mostly Bug-and Dragon-types, or Pokemon in those egg groups. As well as some that float more than fly, like the Hoppip line.

Oh, I see... so hypothetically, if someone had an extremely well-bred butterfly, they could potentially beat your proto-bird?

[silvertongueheir]

Well...perhaps. Though their level of training is also important. But a rare Vivillion pattern would get a high score from most judges in the aesthetics category.

Ohh, I see. So it's obedience, breeding, and looks across bugs, dragons, and birds. And proto-birds.

[silvertongueheir]

[He nods, looking proud.] Indeed.

[protectandselfserve]

Well, it sure sounds like it'd be fun to watch! I'd kinda like to see it sometime.

[silvertongueheir]

Well, when we get out of here, you just might get that chance.
