Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

Olympia, c'mon. Show me your shoes.

...N' I guess I gotta smell 'em, too, so please don't kick me in the face.

[Olympia's most comfortable with showing this to Millium, and still hesitates for a moment before pulling up the bottom of her weird sheet-robe-thing so Millium can see her feet.

Her feet, not her shoes. There probably aren't any shoes here that fit her.

But other than some ashes she got on them while inspecting the altar area, they're pretty clean.]

...Ah.

[She... doesn't seem that surprised, though, all things considered.

Do they smell like anything?]

[I mean, they smell a little like ashes, considering. But other than that, no.]

[She stands up. And so everyone knows:]

Some ashes, but she might've gotten those investigating, I dunno. Smells like ash but nothin' else.

What'd they look like?

[He didn't get to see but he's curious.]

[Millium looks between Jughead and Olympia.]

...Don't think that's important to the trial.

But if it was Olympia, I'll tell you after.

[She's walking back to her podium now.]

If she's secretive about it, it might be.

[Just saying, it's suspicious. Also, continuing to think bout that mud.]

[helpfully chiming in opinions no one asked for]

Could help us narrow down what was going on with the mud outside.

[Honestly Jughead stops himself mid eye roll because ...Clarisse...making a valid point?]

[SIGH, fine. Only because Jughead has a point here.]

Those imprints you saw in the dirt. What kind of shapes were they?

Olympia's feet are pretty small. I think she'd make some pretty obvious tracks if it were her.

They were way smaller than my own feet. Some were slightly bigger, where it looked like there was movement.

...Could be. But the only thing that makes me wonder is that it was storming last night. So the ground would be pretty wet, yeah?

And I dunno if you saw the guestbook before people kept adding to it, but I did. Olympia is pretty heavy. That's why I think she'd make tracks, at least more than a couple.

Maybe they washed away, and only the deeper ones stuck. Something like that.

Rain's really good at cleaning away evidence.
