Fifth Week

Everything's getting worse. Rose Nylund and Frasier Crane murdered Jughead Jones during the event Jughead worked so hard to organize. Given some of the townspeople were in attendance, it didn't give a good impression -- if the visitors did this when trying to be good people and get along with Cartesio, then how will they behave once they get into destroying everything? The cruel method of Jughead's death also left everyone quite horrified, too.

That may be why it's no surprise the town's quiet unrest is slowly turning into real, tangible fury.

During the week, from time to time stones break some of the windows of the motel, looking outside shows a random passerby running away. Graffiti is left on the walls: 'SEE IF YOU LIKE THIS' 'MURDERERS' 'YOU'RE GOING TO DESTROY US ALL', and other similar messages. Some of the store owners hesitate when the visitors approach, but they don't refuse service because money is always nice.

The Sergeant's pervasive influence is starting to cover not only you, but also the entire town of Cartesio. After all, everything that's happening to you and the motel? It's the result of what you and the other visitors have done.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

[Not gonna lie about that.]

[There's an exhale, but it's to fill the silence more than anything that conveys a specific emotion.]

...At least there's that.

I prefer to minimize the deaths I cause... But there's still some that are more satisfying than others.

[And Rose, unfortunately, falls squarely in that category.]

[After a moment, she nods.]

...Yeah, I can't exactly say that I'm going to be shedding any tears over either of them.

[Kino gives a sigh of her own, looking up to the sky.]

I can understand wanting to leave. I can even understand wanting immortality. But they didn't even...

They're idiots.

[Flatly.]

I just wish... Okay, this might sound fucked up, but like - Moloch died because he was trying to build a radio to contact someone on the outside. Bakugou died because he was outside on patrol. Jughead died because he was running a show to make us all look better. Can't someone ever, like, target someone who isn't actively trying to improve shit for us?

It's a little "fucked up."

[But Kino's voice holds no judgment.]

Would it make you feel better if someone like that was the next victim?

[Because Kino really doubts they'll be stopping now.]

...No.

[She says, running a hand through her hair.]

Of course it wouldn't. I just wish - I don't know.

That the people who died deserved it?

No, I don't want... to be surrounded by people who deserve to die.

[She sighs.]

I just all of us were, like - better at fixing this. I mean, god, we all tried our best and they still wrote a huge newspaper article about how we're lying pieces of shit anyways.

I don't think any of us are going to outwit the Sergeant when it comes to our relationship with the town.

[He's just got too much of an advantage there.]

Not like this, anyway.

Maybe not, but like... There's enough riding on it that I can't just give up.

[She sighs.]

[Kino tilts her head down, thoughtful.]

...When you're against an opponent that has an advantage over you... Do you know what to do?

I don't really have the kind of life where I'm frequently facing down opponents.

[That being said, she's listening.]

You create an advantage that allows you to overpower your enemy.

...Anybody who's tried to do that has died.

I didn't say it doesn't have risks.

But if you keep trying to beat an opponent who's stronger than you by standing on even ground, you'll never win that way, either.

Shouldn't it make a difference if there's, like, twenty of you on even ground with them?

Not if the opponent's still stronger than all twenty of you.

[She takes a few moments to think that over, but what she comes back to is...]

If trying to create that advantage means your numbers just keep dwindling even more, is it really the best plan?
