Week 5: Trial

      

Last time it was at dawn. Now it's at sunset. The Sergeant gave everyone plenty of time to investigate and gather evidence, and now that everyone entered the courtroom, he slammed his gavel.

"I can sense a few of you are feeling rather hostile. Remember you're in a courtroom, and you're being watched by everyone in town"

People's opinions of the visitors are already very low, but there's no need to feed them further with a brawl in the courtroom -- or so the Sergeant thinks. There are more podiums draped in black now. Five more people died, seventeen people are alive. How many will be left once the trial is over?

"This time we have three victims in total. Millium Orion, Cian Reikado, and Azura were the unfortunate victims last night, and now you shall debate and decide who is responsible for this.

These are your suspects. Vote for as many as you think are responsible for these crimes"

A band of adventurers had been working against us. Conflict was likely.

So you had a reason to think he was in danger, but he was still alive last you remembered. Got it.

[carbide]

My absence has come at a critical time.

[robitussin]

You said that... Conflict was likely back home. How much have you done to protect him before?

[carbide]

I would have destroyed anything who threatened him.

[robitussin]

Okay. So... You're admitting that it's not out of the question for you to have acted on this.

[carbide]

As I said, it was well-chosen. It was not out of the question before, either.

[robitussin]

Thanks for being honest, I guess.

...One more question, actually. Given the note, it seems like someone specifically targeted Millium. If you were choosing someone here to kill, I'm assuming it wouldn't have been here, since you said you cared about her?

[carbide]

I would not want to kill her, no. Moreover, the prospect of fighting Lammy would make her a difficult target.

[robitussin]

That's what I assumed.

[All the same, after a moment:]

How close were you with Azura?

[carbide]

Not close. I did not speak with her often.

[robitussin]

So if you were wandering around looking for someone to kill for this motive and you saw her, it'd be an acceptable choice for you?

[carbide]

If that situation had arisen, yes. But it would not.

[robitussin]

It would not, instead of it did not?

[carbide]

Both.

[robitussin]

Yeah, but you said would instead of did first.

[carbide]

Is that important?

[robitussin]

...Maybe not, but I'm curious anyways.

[This isn't pedantic at all, clearly.]

[carbide]

It would not happen, so it did not. If I had planned to kill someone, I would have chosen a target in advance.
