Week 5: Trial

      

Last time it was at dawn. Now it's at sunset. The Sergeant gave everyone plenty of time to investigate and gather evidence, and now that everyone entered the courtroom, he slammed his gavel.

"I can sense a few of you are feeling rather hostile. Remember you're in a courtroom, and you're being watched by everyone in town"

People's opinions of the visitors are already very low, but there's no need to feed them further with a brawl in the courtroom -- or so the Sergeant thinks. There are more podiums draped in black now. Five more people died, seventeen people are alive. How many will be left once the trial is over?

"This time we have three victims in total. Millium Orion, Cian Reikado, and Azura were the unfortunate victims last night, and now you shall debate and decide who is responsible for this.

These are your suspects. Vote for as many as you think are responsible for these crimes"

I found one of Lammy's arms discarded a little away from... [ she hesitates ] ... the two of them; the arm seems to have been broken off right at the joint. And underneath [ another pause, her breath hitching. struggling to say the name ] Millium-chan, on the ground, there was a dent-- it kind of looked like a pyramid, and it was partially underneath her. The dent, that is.

[unfashionably]

I was at the junkyard. [ And as everyone can see (and heard when he came in with an orchestra of paint cans in his arms), he picked up some junk. ] I saw smoke from a fire so I headed over to it first, but there was another place to the right of me that smelled suspicious too. Somebody was really interested in burning stuff.

[ He very, very lightly nudges one of the paint cans on the ground with his foot. The labels are charred. ] These were all there and there were puddles of paint burning. There was this weird teal fabric nearby too, it's pretty small and it's been singed but I grabbed it anyway. [ And he takes it out of his pocket and SLAMS it on the podium!!! Manhandling evidence, oh yeah! ]

Last thing I found was a small paintbrush. You can see for yourself, but it has some dry beige-colored paint on its handle. [ This he gently places down because it could break, unlike the fabric which is, y'know, fabric. ]

Oh yeah, it was kinda hard to tell 'cause I guess some of the paint burned up or somethin', but if these cans were all full there probably should've been more paint around. [ Take that as you will. ]

There were a few cans of enamel paint, as well as a paintbrush, missing from the hardware store. Did anyone find where those went?

I found Cian's body on the roof along with Ryouka. Cian's body was badly bruised and she had multiple broken ribs. The bruising was mostly on the front of her body, I didn't see much bruising in the back. There were no other injuries. I wasn't able to tell what object was used to do the damage.

There was a note in her pocket, but Ryouka took it before I could read it.

[HMMM. bad. an empty podium on one side of him, and a suspect on the other. Osomatsu's pretty upset right now, it's been a bad week, but he at least came with most of his evidence. the broken pole-like object pieces stay near, and the other things are set on his podium]

So, when I was in the junkyard, too, I found a pile of stuff that... Is probably relevant? I mean, it was melted, and there was ash at the bottom of the pile. There's this. [the pole] The ends of it are melted, and it was broken in half. I think it was a weapon. And then... [gestures to the clump of metal] It was also melted. It might be gold? Lastly, I found a matchbox, that's also a little crispy. [but you can still tell it's a matchbox]

Also... there was this... really bad smell near the ashes. Something was burned, but I don't... know what that something was. I just know it was really gross.

I examined Miss Azura's body. She had a slit throat and a blunt wound on the back of her head. I also found a bloody kitchen knife as well as a sizable bloody rock that seemed consistent with her wounds.

She was by the pond in the park and had some sort of makeup on her fingers, and a little on her face. [Which is honestly the only reason Kino was able to tell just what it was supposed to be.] She might have been using her reflection in the pond to put it on when someone attacked her from behind and then finished the job... But that's just what I think.

Someone nabbed wirecutters from the hardware store. Makeup and a bag from the beauty salon too.

I was at Millium’s body. [ oda’s voice is emotionless today, detached more than usual. ] Her robot had dents consistent with being hit with a blunt object. There were also some very small specks of tan paint near it. Millium’s body was found face down under the robot, her back covered in bruises. Besides her neck being broken, she also had broken arms and legs.

[ and he’ll go back to silence, watching the crowd ]

I found Azura by the pond. I didn't look over her body, but nearby there was a bag of beauty supplies. Foundation, blush, lipstick, that kind of stuff. The only thing used was a container of concealer. There was something in the pond, too. It was an oval gold coin, pretty large. There were some horizontal indentations on it, but there wasn't much special about them.

Lastly... Part of the ground was disturbed. It looked like someone's foot stuck into the mud and slipped.

[Wow, Niwa does not like being on the suspect list here.]

So um... I found the wire clippers a little ways away from Cian-san's body. If. If anyone was still wondering about that.

As for the note... I'm very sorry I took off with it! G-Given the circumstances, it was rather shocking to be alone there with the person it was addressed from. If we're doing a handwriting check I can pass it off to whoever wants it. But it said, "Millium - Please meet me on the roof at six. I have something important to discuss. - Keith"

[Franciscus stares at his own photo. He looks like he's about to yell again, then composes himself.]

I'm not the culprit. And I do have an alibi. Kinzie can confirm I was with her all last night.

[unfashionably]

Is that somethin' you usually do?

[marmoron]

All last night. But what were you doing on Friday morning?

[carbide]

[Olympia walks in, still wearing nothing, and just kind of stares vaguely towards Millium's podium.]

[clearities]

[ Sakura notices that pretty easily since they're right next to each other, but: ] What were you doing last night...?

[streetwolf]

[He's got nothing of use here. Only his hood pulled up around his head and hands shoved in his pockets.]

'As many as you think'? [A snort but there's no amusement in it this time.] You ain't even going to to tell us how many it is this time?

[unfashionably]

Guess he's not feeling charitable. [ Not that he knows Sarge told 'em last time. ]

[marmoron]

[Okay, first of all, fuck you Sarge. How dare you (correctly) imply that Keith is ready for a throwdown, and what the everliving fuck is this suspect list?!

Keith glares at the Sergeant, then at each and every suspect on this list.]

Alright, fess up. Which of you assholes did this?

[Oh look, it's been less than a minute and Keith's already yelling. What a good start...]

Don't act like you're not on the list.

[There's none of the normal yelling. He's pretty calm right now, or cold...]

[ actually raises her hand like she's in a classroom; while she does have some words for the Sergeant, those are things that she'll ask about after the trial is done and over with-- she wants a bit of clarification here: ] You didn't say how many people are... [...] ...responsible, but, um, will the votes just be based on majority? Like, even if there is more than one culprit-san, if the votes aren't even, would only one person be... [ swallows hard ] ...executed?

[cartesio]

Majority rules. An already defined number of people with the most votes will receive the axe. If there's a tie...well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

[He's not saying a specific number. Looks like he's keeping that particular tidbit under wraps and he seems kind of excited about it]

[ someone seems kind of surprised to see his picture on the suspect list but he's... going to roll with it. bolin sighs and then just looks out at everyone. ]

Alright, sure.

[clearities]

Bolin-san... um, what were you doing last night?

[pecker]

[Niwa has been very quiet, although it seems she's just been afraid to speak up. She's definitely shaking in her feathers.]

I... It's sad, seeing my face up there. I had no reason to do any of this...

Yeah, that's easy to say.

What were you doing last night, then, and how much did you consider the offer the Sergeant gave us?

[he can't believe he's doing this. he's been pretty quiet up until now, but...]

[Keith obliges with a bit of a deadpan expression. He'll refrain from commenting until everyone's results are in.]

Since there's evidence someone stepped into the pond, I'd like to examine everyone's shoes and feet, please.

[She'll be looking for signs of mud or excessive cleanliness.]

[Niwatori's boots are absolutely covered in feathers. Which are dry.]

Hey, all five of you. Since Azura had concealer on her hands when she was killed, I'm gonna check you all over for any real quick.

[When they come forward, she'll be paying careful attention to their hands, face and the outside of their clothing.]

[Franciscus' hands and face are clean of any concealer, and there's none on his clothes either.]

In the spirit of full disclosure, I did wash my face and hands this morning.

[Franciscus has been gripping his podium, breathing slowly ever since Natalie smelled paint on Olympia. He lifts his head at last.]

None of you...none of you attack her. You'll get hurt, or punished.

[A cold smile starts to form on his face.]

...it's right there on my guestbook profile, you know. Deception. I'm a liar. I put on false faces and speak falsehoods as easily as I breathe. But I swear, right now, all these are true.

I never intended to kill Millium Orion.

Gerard did not kill Azura.

I never raised a kitchen knife against Azura.

Hydrangea did nothing to harm Azura.

I am the only person here who could kill Olympia without further consequences.
