Week 6: Trial

   

The atmosphere at the courtroom is different this time. Although people are filling the tribunes, not everyone seems to be furious with the outsiders. Some are scowling and looking at them with outrage, others are cautiously wary of them. Unhappy, but not about to snap anyone's neck.

The Sergeant waited until everyone was at their spots, and counted them:

"Our numbers are dwindling. It's surprising, I admit. I thought there'd be more of you at this point"

Not that it's inconvenient. It's just surprising. The number of podiums belonging to the deceased prove just how many have perished. Several of you may be feeling a bit lonely in the sea of black velvet.

"Wayne Uedera, Osamu Dazai. They're the victims this time. Good luck, everybody. Here's my help to you all, like last time, vote for as many as you consider necessary:

To start with... Where were you last night?

[quickpersuader]

My room. I don't think it necessarily protects me more, but I didn't want to be a body found in the dumpster or anything, either.

[As they'd discussed before.]

[robitussin]

Right. And you were alone in there all evening?

[quickpersuader]

Yes. I haven't invited anyone into my room so far, and I wasn't going to change that on a Thursday night.

[robitussin]

[She nods.]

And the threat the Sergeant made... What would he have taken?

[quickpersuader]

I'm not sure about that one...

[She tips her head, thoughtful.]

At first I thought about my physical belongings, but none of them are that important to me. Woodsman and Canon were gifts, but if I had to, I could replace them. I traveled for a long time without Flute, so losing that isn't too much of a problem either. Losing Hermes would put me in a sticky situation, but if I had to, I could find other ways of transport.

So then I thought about other things... Like if he tried to take away my ability to travel. But I couldn't think of a way for him to cleanly do that. He could crush my legs, I think, but there are ways I could travel like that as well. I don't typically travel with others, but it isn't something I'm unused to, so if I had to I'm sure I could find a way to hitch a ride with others if I needed to. Even if it was something like taking away my vision so I couldn't see the world anymore... there are other ways to experience it besides that.

So... basically, I don't know.

[robitussin]

[She takes that all in, but...]

You don’t think he would’ve just taken away your desire to travel? Like... Millium’s friend who lives here now, and thinks he chose that himself.

[quickpersuader]

[Ah! She gently taps a fist against a palm.]

That could be it.

[robitussin]

[There’s a small frown.]

But you didn’t consider that before now at all?

[quickpersuader]

To be honest... I thought of a few possibilities at first, but after I dismissed those, I decided to just operate under the assumption that someone else would murder instead.

[It didn't seem like an unreasonable assumption, all things considered.]

We've already had multiple people trying to kill someone every week for a few weeks in a row now, so risking my life on trial didn't seem worth it.

[robitussin]

...Okay, that’s kind of messed up, but thank you for not murdering anyone if you’re telling the truth.

[Regardless, she continues.]

But what you’re saying is that you wouldn’t have been unwilling to kill someone for this, you just thought it would be unnecessary.

[quickpersuader]

Basically.

[Sorry Natalie.]

[robitussin]

...Cool. Thank you for your honesty.

[She suffers.]

[quickpersuader]

Anything else you can think of?

[Please just grill her and get this over with.]

[robitussin]

[She shakes her head.]
