Week 6: Trial

   

The atmosphere at the courtroom is different this time. Although people are filling the tribunes, not everyone seems to be furious with the outsiders. Some are scowling and looking at them with outrage, others are cautiously wary of them. Unhappy, but not about to snap anyone's neck.

The Sergeant waited until everyone was at their spots, and counted them:

"Our numbers are dwindling. It's surprising, I admit. I thought there'd be more of you at this point"

Not that it's inconvenient. It's just surprising. The number of podiums belonging to the deceased prove just how many have perished. Several of you may be feeling a bit lonely in the sea of black velvet.

"Wayne Uedera, Osamu Dazai. They're the victims this time. Good luck, everybody. Here's my help to you all, like last time, vote for as many as you consider necessary:

Yeah. But... I still think the two deaths are connected somehow. There are too many connections between the library and the electronics store.

So one culprit?

Maybe? Or... If it was two, maybe two that were working together.

[She frowns.]

I just can't see a reason that the raincoat would be in the electronics store, or that there would be a trail of photos otherwise. But if you have one...

[quickpersuader]

I'm stumped, too.

[And she slumps very slightly.]

If two were working together, that would point at Mr. Dabi and Mr. Hawks, I think. Otherwise it's down to myself, Keith, or Mr. Bolin. It might not mean much coming from me, but I wouldn't challenge someone like Mr. Wayne to a fight with a knife. Keith was with you, unless you're trying to protect him. So... that would leave Mr. Bolin.

But that's just my thoughts for now.

[robitussin]

There’s a lot of fire involved, too...

[She frowns.]

But honestly, I can’t see anyone on the list choosing a knife, unless they had no other option.

[quickpersuader]

I keep my persuaders with me at all times. I just don't have the reach to make a knife a very effective weapon.

[Although...]

Mr. Bolin doesn't seem to know how to use them.

[robitussin]

I... don't think he's very likely to have done this, honestly, even if I'm keeping an open mind.

[quickpersuader]

Who do you think is more likely right now?

[Might as well compare notes.]

[robitussin]

[She frowns.]

...If I had to guess, I'd say it was probably Dabi and Hawks, but I can't say for certain yet. What do you think?

[quickpersuader]

Either Mr. Bolin acting alone or Mr. Dabi and Mr. Hawks working together. If it turns out they split up before the murders took place, Mr. Dabi is likelier because of the fire.

[robitussin]

[She tilts her head.]

Why Bolin?

[marmoron]

Do we know that it wasn't the culprit who emptied the bullets after killing Wayne to make it look like there was a fight? Wayne may have been sleeping when the culprit found them.

[A beat.]

The two deaths are definitely connected. That trail of Dazai's photographs formed a path from that abandoned building to the library area. It's probably one culprit and one accomplice that are responsible.

[robitussin]

...That's a good point. It'd make it easier to leave the kind of wound he had, especially if they did use the knife that was found.

[She frowns.]

But there's not really a way to find out for sure if it was fired before or after he died, right?

It'd be hard to say. The gun wasn't found near his hands or anything, right?

[Turning to Kino.]

When you looked at Wayne's body, did you find any traces of gunpowder residue or anything like that?

I noticed the gun near him, and residue.

Why? 'Cause we're from the same world?

[robitussin]

...Because you already admitted you were together last night, too.

[She shrugs.]

As much as Dabi is a villain, you know I'm a hero, right? It's not exactly "heroic" to endorse a cover-up. Or flat out kill someone.

[quickpersuader]

No, but you are both suspects, so we need to consider every option.

Naturally that includes myself as well, but I've already given my reasons why it would be physically difficult for me to have done this murder. And I'll continue to answer other questions people have, too.

[robitussin]

Most heroes probably don't hang out with villains all the time, though, do they? Like, no offense, but...

[She shrugs.]

Some people might say it's... not heroic, but at least not completely deplorable to help kill one person to make sure you get to keep something that allows you to save a bunch of them.

[icariot]

Most heroes also aren't confined in a tiny population of people, the majority of whom don't have the quirks your society is based around, and the ones that do are either dead or a villain you're obligated to keep watch of.

No offense taken. What makes a hero is personal to each hero, as long as certain expectations are met.

[robitussin]

Obligated? Why's that?

[A small pause.]

If it's personal to each hero, then what would it be for you?
