Week 6: Trial

   

The atmosphere at the courtroom is different this time. Although people are filling the tribunes, not everyone seems to be furious with the outsiders. Some are scowling and looking at them with outrage, others are cautiously wary of them. Unhappy, but not about to snap anyone's neck.

The Sergeant waited until everyone was at their spots, and counted them:

"Our numbers are dwindling. It's surprising, I admit. I thought there'd be more of you at this point"

Not that it's inconvenient. It's just surprising. The number of podiums belonging to the deceased prove just how many have perished. Several of you may be feeling a bit lonely in the sea of black velvet.

"Wayne Uedera, Osamu Dazai. They're the victims this time. Good luck, everybody. Here's my help to you all, like last time, vote for as many as you consider necessary:

Some really were missing because of Dabi. But yes, Wayne damaged them too badly to keep.

[She stares at him for a long moment before continuing.]

I get why he did it. Why did you?

[icariot]

I needed to protect what's mine. "Lose what matters to you most," is what the Sarge said, and I couldn't let that just go.

[robitussin]

Was it really just your wings, then, or...?

[icariot]

I'm sure you can guess, but Dabi and I have known each other longer than just here. Maybe not as close, but more than just coworkers.

[robitussin]

[She takes a moment to puzzle that out, but in the end, what she has to wonder about is:]

...But it says hero in your entry in the guestbook.

[If it wasn't Natalie that was asking, with all she's done during the course of the trial, and being one of the people who also always stood with Dabi, Hawks might not have elaborated as much as he was about to. He's not the most nurturing of people, after all.]

Yeah. And I am. But shit can get complicated real fast, especially when you go too fast for your own good. You know, I was tapped to be a hero before I was ten. The Hero Commission wouldn't have let me pick something else if I realized options even existed. I was a pro the moment I graduated, and in the top 10 --out of tens of thousands mind you-- before a year was up. I don't even know if I would have chosen to be a hero, had I the choice. When along comes some villains... They promise to change society. It was one of the first choices I could make on my own, and if I can prevent other children from ending up as I did, don't you think that's a good enough reason to turn? It's another way of saving people.

[robitussin]

[She listens, and while it leaves a bitter frown on her face, she continues after a moment.]

From ending up like you did? Do you mean without a choice in it, or did something else happen...?

[icariot]

Without the choice yes, but also that it's somehow necessary to indoctrinate children into a career where dying is just another hazard, and that they're supposed to be happy giving up their lives.

[robitussin]

That's fucked up and all, but... He's mentioned some of the people you've fought against are kids too, right?

[icariot]

I've never fought any kids Dabi has. [A lot of the steam he had in the beginning of this talk is gone, leaving Hawks mostly sound worn out] I still do my job and rescue people, and stop other baser criminals. I don't want people to die...I just want society to change. If passing over information and minimizing collateral casualties is how I can do it, I will. A world where heroes aren't as necessary, and children get to be children.... I'll do whatever it takes.
