April 7th - Welcome Party

Welcome Party
Though you've never seen the casino before, it is easy to find today. This is partly attributable to the music spilling from open doors right into the town. The people of Cartesio have made good on their announcement - doubtlessly, there is a party going on here.

Anyone entering will be confronted with a friendly citizen pulling them aside to inform them of their dress rental service. Though it is called 'rental' there is no actual fee to be paid. The townspeople have simply brought a collection of suits and cocktail dresses into the casino foyer and they are offering to lend them out for the occasion. A folding screen to get changed behind is provided as well.

Once you venture deeper into the casino, you'll find yourself in a surprisingly spacious room. Tables that might normally occupy the open space have been pushed to the wall and filled with various buffet foods. Though you might be tempted to spend your whole afternoon trying out the various local specialties, the rhythmic music from the speakers tries to lure you to the dancefloor. A few locals are already swinging their hips to the beat.

Though if you're simply looking for the main highlight of a casino, you won't have to look long either. Across from the buffet, you will find a wide variety of game machines. Pachinko, slot machines.... even a few odd-one-out games that look like they should rather belong in an arcade. Try your luck, try your skill! If you prove successful, an employee is waiting to hand out various fun goods to you.

There are quite a few townspeople in attendance on this party, but there is a silent understanding that you tourists are the VIPs here. Anywhere you go, any game you want to try, the citizens are quick to move aside for you and let you have the maximum amount of fun.

Somethin' like that.

[ he glances back at the notebook for a second, and then back at jughead. ]

It's just...been forever since I've written anything.

[Jughead shifts with some interest. He wasn't really expecting a sincere answer to his question.]

What did you used to write?

Not much. Some story drafts... but I’ve never thought they were that good anyways.

[There’s something of a small snort of disbelief at Oda’s response. A mafioso who doesn’t like killing, and is self critical of his writing hobby. What a character.]

No one’s going to write a groundbreaking draft. Unless you’re...I don’t know, Kerouac or Tarantino.

[The taste of a moody teen boy, everyone.]

What do you write about?

I doubt I'd ever be able to write something "groundbreaking" in the first place.

[ he doesn't know who those people are, either. maybe they're writers that are actually good, unlike him. ]

But I don't really know. Something...something people can relate to. I like stories about common people and how they face their troubles and either grow or fall.

[A not-so-quiet mutter:]

Not with that attitude.

[Jughead's not the king of self esteem but he knows that you've got to big up your ego when it comes to creative endeavors.]

That's...

[Not what he expected, honestly, though that's not a criticism. 'Common people' tended to be the focus of Jughead's writing too, though in the process they were revealed to be far less than common.]

Not bad, actually. As a theme. When does a mafioso care about the Average Joe?

Though I'm a Mafioso, I'm actually the lowest ranked member. I'm just a handyman.

[ the port mafia's janitor. ]

I guess at one point I wanted to write something based on my life...but that'd be a waste of time, I think.

[Jughead looks off to the side in disbelief.]

The life of a mafia handyman who adopts orphans in his spare time and hates killing. You’re right, it’s completely unoriginal.

[He crosses his arms on the table, and leans forward.]

How about you tell me all the boring details, and I tell you if you’ve got a Pulitzer Prize on your hands?
