WEEK 2: April 8th - April 12th

Second Week

Seven days have passed. Quite peaceful days, almost too peaceful. The town has welcomed you, excited to see tourists for the first time in many, many, many years. Some may have liked the peace, others may have been annoyed by it, but it was undeniable Cartesio seemed like such a nice and safe place it was hard to believe you had been told to kill each other.

But the threat is still up in the air. What's more: how much patience does the Sergeant have left?

Every time you take a look into the Lodge, you see the Sergeant. Lately he's looking more and more annoyed. Even though you can't see his face, you can feel he's getting frustrated. How long will it be before he lashes out and does something about these peaceful days?

Nobody in the town could suspect the harrowing times that'd befall Cartesio.

When you wake up on Sunday, you'll find new maps in the map rack and brochures on the table, showing places you hadn't noticed in the town before. Enjoy!

I’m guessing you figured out where the chicken came from.

There was a country where everyone had pets. They gave me a chicken to take with me...

I ate it, though.

[robitussin]

...So he gave you another chicken to remind you, or something?

[She wrinkles her nose.]

He's weird.

[quickpersuader]

Something like that.

[Weird indeed.]

I know how to raise a chicken, but I wasn't expecting to actually need to...

[robitussin]

...I wonder if Hawks could help you out with that.

[No.]

[quickpersuader]

I could always cook it. But the diner food really is better...

[Kino...........]

[robitussin]

If you're going to cook it, you better do it before one of the kids inevitably gets attached.

[quickpersuader]

Probably...

[A long, considering look. And then a frown, and a sigh.]

It seems like a waste.

[robitussin]

[She pauses, glancing at the chicken herself.]

What does? Keeping it alive?

[quickpersuader]

Killing and cooking it when there's no need to.

[Even Kino has some awareness about this.]

But I'm no good for taking care of other living things.

[robitussin]

Maybe you could give it to someone? But, I mean... It's just a chicken. I can't imagine it would be that hard to keep it alive.

[quickpersuader]

As long as it has vegetables to eat... Well, I did learn other parts of caring for it, too.

[...]

Would you like a chicken?

[Wow.]

[robitussin]

[She almost immediately shakes her head.]

...I've only ever had a pet cat, and it died, so I'm not sure I'm the most qualified for the position of chicken caretaker.

[quickpersuader]

[Oh. Cats are common pets in various countries, huh...]

Sorry to hear that.

[robitussin]

[A shrug.]

It happens. If nobody else wants it, I could take it off your hands, but I probably shouldn't be your first choice.

[quickpersuader]

[A nod.]

We'll see. Maybe someone else here knows how to care for chickens...

[Okay, now that's definitely veering into wishful thinking.]

[robitussin]

[She shrugs.]

I don't remember seeing anything about, like, farming on anybody's biography, but I could be misremembering.

[quickpersuader]

Technically I know how to care for them, but it wasn't on mine.

[Fushigi mystery.]

Maybe it's only important things?

[robitussin]

I mean... Mine lists swimming and academics. I'm not sure those are, like, crucial facts.

[quickpersuader]

[Hmmm... Kino spends a moment thinking that over.]

How good are you at both?

[robitussin]

I swam competitively for a while, but not any more... I've probably gotten out of practice.

[A shrug.]

I'm better at academics than most people, I guess.

[quickpersuader]

Maybe it's relative? Like the things you're best at.

[robitussin]

...That would make sense. Mine would definitely have piano and school there, so it checks out.

[She looks thoughtful; it isn't something she's considered.]

[quickpersuader]

My marksmanship is probably what I rely on the most...

[It's really amazing how many people will try to kill you out on the open road.]

[robitussin]

...I feel like I'll regret asking this, but do you have to shoot people or things a lot?
