Week 2: Trial

The day still is April 13th. It's now the afternoon

Just like he said he would, the Sergeant went to everyone and told them to go to the courthouse. It wasn't difficult to find -- three of the tourists already knew where it was. What nobody, not even these three thought, was that the courtroom would be so much populated this time.

All of the visitors went into the only trial room in the courthouse. In the center there were several podiums, formed into a circle. Each podium had a small notepad and a pen, and a slot on the top part of its surface, presumably to insert your vote in it. Each podium has a small placard showing who it belongs to -- except for Moloch von Zinzer's podium. That one is draped with black velvet.

The tribunes at the sides of the courtroom are higher than where your podiums are. During the trial Sakura, Wayne and Millium attended those tribunes had been empty, but this time they're not. Quite a lot of the townspeople are sitting there, talking with each other and observing all of the tourists with different expressions. Confusion, disdain, shock, all kinds of emotions, all united by the feeling of morbid curiosity. What did the tourists do? What will happen? That's what they're wondering.

And above all of them, on the judge's seat...the Sergeant. None of the townspeople's paying attention to him, he's sitting on his chair and twirling the gavel in his hand. He still is very pleased a murder happened, and once it's time to start, he says:

"We have gathered today for the trial to find the culprit for the death of Moloch von Zinzer. It's your task to discuss, find the truth of this murder and bring it to light. For the sake of not letting you bunch run in circles, I have decided to lend you a hand and give you the five most likely suspects -- the culprit being one of them"

And indeed, five small photos appear on your podium.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. With no further ado, I wish you good luck!"

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to you now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

[ He knew there was something similar with Millium. And he kind of wishes they had a long talk about this... but Nine doesn't really do long talks or thinking ahead. ]

There's the quiet sound of a photo being dropped into a slot.]

[Similarly, here's Olympia scribbling something on her pad.]

[ Still holding on to Millium here, but definitely weakening on the resolve to not cry herself. ]

I didn't really plan it. I didn't go there to kill anyone.

Then why?!

[ There were a lot of things and he's not even sure how to even start... ]

He was there when I was looking around for more knives. And I realized time was almost up, you know? What the hell would that bastard do if no one died?

[ That's such a hideous reason to die! Cian can't hold back a sob anymore. ]

You should've thought about it... if nothing else picked someone who wouldn't care...

I know. [ He makes a noise as he looks over at picture with the black cloth over it. ]

I'm from a place that is always at war, but we would forget the dead. So, I fought and killed so many people, but I never really remembered them. It's the first time I can actually remember someone I killed...

[ ...this really isn't helpful at all but. ]

Does that matter? A kill is a kill.

[Says the little girl who everyone's been thinking that about since day one.]

Who— who cares if he says he did it?! We should just vote for Dabi! Dabi's a villain, isn't he?! Who's really more dangerous here?!

[This is desperation, pure and simple. She was helpless before, but Crow was already dying. Right now, Nine is here, Nine is alive. Even if it's useless, she can still try to do something.]

[ This outburst actually makes Cian release Millium fully. She understands the despair, so she won't say anything... but she's also super not down with voting Dabi. ]

No one asked to listen to your whining either. [ Got no problems with putting that out there. ]

Nice to see you're as selfish as you are loud. You can't just scream expecting to get what you want.

[ quietly ]

Would that make us any better? Voting for Dabi because he's a villain even if he hasn't really done anything here yet?

[ That makes her hesitate. This is Dabi, she wants to give a good answer to him, she needs to get it together for that. ]

Y-yes. It's... if you kill someone innocent or if you kill someone who's a stain on your society, that.... that would feel different too, wouldn't it?

[ well, he doesn't need to know anymore. he sighs, and drops his vote. ]

That's what I'm saying. Why take some guy out who wasn't hurting anyone for a prize you don't even want... Fucking idiot...

Because he probably didn't care who he killed. Most likely, Moloch was just the easiest target, or just the first one he saw after he made up his mind. It probably meant the same to him if he died or lived in the first place.

[The emotion behind Clarisse's words is, of course, anger, and yet there's more to them besides her default derisive scorn.]

What a waste. Wasn't expecting you to be so weak.

[Olympia, in contrast, is essentially monotone.]

He's failed, and has no way to win. All he can do now is stand in our way.

[He's failed.

Clarisse sneers, folds her arms tight.]

Are we gonna keep wasting time, then? I'm ready to get this over with.

[ smashes his hands against his podium, not really sure what to say here ]
