Week 2: Trial

The day still is April 13th. It's now the afternoon

Just like he said he would, the Sergeant went to everyone and told them to go to the courthouse. It wasn't difficult to find -- three of the tourists already knew where it was. What nobody, not even these three thought, was that the courtroom would be so much populated this time.

All of the visitors went into the only trial room in the courthouse. In the center there were several podiums, formed into a circle. Each podium had a small notepad and a pen, and a slot on the top part of its surface, presumably to insert your vote in it. Each podium has a small placard showing who it belongs to -- except for Moloch von Zinzer's podium. That one is draped with black velvet.

The tribunes at the sides of the courtroom are higher than where your podiums are. During the trial Sakura, Wayne and Millium attended those tribunes had been empty, but this time they're not. Quite a lot of the townspeople are sitting there, talking with each other and observing all of the tourists with different expressions. Confusion, disdain, shock, all kinds of emotions, all united by the feeling of morbid curiosity. What did the tourists do? What will happen? That's what they're wondering.

And above all of them, on the judge's seat...the Sergeant. None of the townspeople's paying attention to him, he's sitting on his chair and twirling the gavel in his hand. He still is very pleased a murder happened, and once it's time to start, he says:

"We have gathered today for the trial to find the culprit for the death of Moloch von Zinzer. It's your task to discuss, find the truth of this murder and bring it to light. For the sake of not letting you bunch run in circles, I have decided to lend you a hand and give you the five most likely suspects -- the culprit being one of them"

And indeed, five small photos appear on your podium.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. With no further ado, I wish you good luck!"

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to you now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

[If you haven’t seen Dazai get serious before this might be a pleasant surprise for you.]

I examined our victim, the late Mister Moloch. His clothes were smeared with a dark liquid, primarily around his right arm. By it’s scent I believe the liquid in question was motor oil.

As for wounds, he had only one. A deep stab wound in his abdomen, consistent with a knife wound.

Do you think the culprit intended to burn the body? Though I'm curious as to why they'd burn the car along with it.

[ I mean Bakugou was handling this seriously no doubt about it but now he just looks absolutely pissy now, even more than usual.

If Dazai is starting them off, he'll add to it. Also he has a mop now. ]

It looks like someone just fucking left a sticky mop hanging around in the diner for some stupid reason. Whatever the crappy clear liquid was happens to be concentrated on most of the handle and nowhere else. There's also some rust stuck to it and the mophead too.

[In the interest of keeping things organized, hello Dazai, have some evidence!]

I investigated a large stack of cars a couple feet from the car that Moloch was found in. There was a lot of suspicious things there, like a large stash of motoroil in the top trunk, which was surrounded by more oil in a circle with a single smudge to mess it up.

Near the base of the pile was a pool of drying blood and a partial bloody footprint leading towards the burnt car. Moloch was probably stabbed there and then moved into the car.

[ While Sakura doesn't have much to say in the way of discussing the murder itself, there is one thing that she can't help but bring up, aloud. ]

This is... different?

[ There's definitely quite a bit of differences this time. ]

[Kino's side eyeing the crowd they have, but not much that can be done about it now.]

[He's quiet, not enough that he can't be heard. He's not capable of that but he's trying.]

It's like he's making it entertainment.

What the hell kind of suspect list is this?

[ Cian looks pale and sickly today, the murder has not been sitting well with her. But this comment gets some strong nodding. ]

So we can only vote for people on this list?

[She sounds so disappointed.]

Well, while I don’t think any of us would find your actions any less...deplorable, I and I’m sure a few of the others would still maintain some respect for your ability to take responsibility.

.... they'd die if they did that. I'm sure respect is enough for many people and they wouldn't need life on top of it, but... it's still a difficult choice.

[ Looks at this suspect list, blinks. Can't say he's surprised at seeing himself up here but some of the others...huh. ]

Nice, got an audience. [ That's all he has to say really, and he doesn't seem bothered at all. ]

[Unlike before when she was mostly wearing her suit dress, Niwatori wore her warrior outfit (shown in the icon) this time. Niwa why.]

Um, well, may I say something? Y-You see, if we're looking at a knife wound, we definitely found the weapon... As well as a bunch of similar ones. I'm not sure why the killer would need to throw away so many other knives, but there sure were a lot in those trash cans in the park.

Maybe they wanted to throw off the trail or something?

[Millium really doesn't like this list. Not one bit.

But okay. Okay. Fine. There is a way to handle it, and it's by being her usual best self.]

Hey, Sarge! Are you gonna give us space to get everyone naked or am I gonna have to try to build a privacy wall outta these podiums?

[There's not even a good reason to suggest this yet, but YOU KEPT HER HERE, SERGEANT. YOU KNEW THIS WAS COMING.]

[well, it seems that there are other people here who know what they are doing. Osomatsu still feels sick to his stomach about the whole mess, but he was warned about this trial that was going to happen. might as well share what he has with the others]

I dunno if this is important, but I stopped by the storage room right after I got back to the motel and found it messier than the last time I'd been in there. The stuff on the cabinets had been pushed around, like someone had ransacked the place in a hurry. I don't know if anything was missing, but I did see a bunch of matchboxes.

I found a matchbox near the scene.

[Olympia pulls a radio out of... somewhere... and plunks it on her podium. Well, it's sort of a radio. It's unfinished, with some loose parts accompanying it.]

I don't know what this device is, but I found it a short distance from the burning car, near a gouge in the ground.

Was there anything else with it? Wires and stuff like that without a case is never good.

[Well okay, this sure is a thing then? Not that he looks like he's that willing to participate with the way he's just glaring at the Sergeant and crossing his arms, but hey. Maybe he'll actually look your way if you ask him something.]

Since there was oil everywhere, what if we checked the suspects for someone who smells like motor oil?

[Goodness knows Kino's familiar enough with the scent.]

[ Though he probably smells like trash cans still from shoving his hands in there. He also smells of soap.]

[ oda's not a loud speaker, but he's going to do his best to get everyone's attention by hitting the podium a couple times ]

So...instead of getting everyone naked...why don't we just check people's clothes? There's a lot of knife and rust in the junkyard, so maybe some of it got on the culprit's clothes.

I got some rust on my cape from when we were collecting the knife.

[ It...probably also smells like garbage can funk. RIP cape. But here is Nine ready to be inspected. ]

While we're discussing all this, Cardy and I also found an empty motor oil can and a bloody wad of duct tape in a trash can at the gas station.

[He holds up the bags cheerfully! Some of that cheer is strained because ughhhhhhhh his gloves. why. they've got motor oil gunk all over them.]

Tape...? Ooh! Maybe that's what was sticking on the mop!

[But why would you tape a mop.]

Oi, listen up!

[ Sorry about this in advance, everyone... ]

I'm going to need to fucking see your hands and arms, so show me your hands, take off your gloves, and roll up your sleeves or whatever if you have them. The killer might've gotten fucking careless when they were messing around -- maybe they got injured somehow, who knows.

[ He's going to be checking for anything off with people's hands and arms. He's looking for anything strange, whether it be an injury, smudges, whatever. He's planning on being thorough about this too, and looking for anything underneath people's fingernails. ]

Not showing 'em to you. [ He had his streak of being cooperative, but seeing as his sleeves come down to before his elbows, Bakugou can see plenty from a distance. ]
