Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

I think I can do without screaming.

[This sugary goodness is super good, though.]

At least the food in this country is good. What flavors did you get?

[burgerprince]

About half of them.

[He takes a bite from the bounty of flavors. Salted Caramel. Nice.]

Can't really go wrong when it comes to ice cream.

[quickpersuader]

There's probably countries with... unique flavors. [Though Kino tends to be happy with most foods.]

I haven't seen a lot of these flavors before, though. Do they have many of these where you're from?

[Chomp. Mint chocolate chip!]

[burgerprince]

You mean in a regional scale or broader?

[quickpersuader]

[The spoon remains at Kino's lips for a moment as the traveler hums thoughtfully.]

Whichever ones you're familiar with, then.

[burgerprince]

We've got most of these.

[Some of the more experimental flavors are just ones he wouldn't expect at all, rather than completely foreign. Watermelon? Really?]

Less excitement, more comfortable familiarity.

[quickpersuader]

Ice cream is a treat when you travel all the time.

[Not everywhere has it, for one, not to mention the cost.]

Do you mind telling me more about where you come from?

[burgerprince]

Small town America. A little place called Riverdale, once known for its maple syrup, high school football team, and never letting the fifties die.

[A pause.]

Now it's known for corruption and murder.

[quickpersuader]

["America" again. Kino doesn't catch like, half of that, but:]

How did that happen?

[burgerprince]

Someone killed the captain of the football team, Jason Blossom. Everything fell apart from there.

[quickpersuader]

[A sport thing?]

Why?

[burgerprince]

For a while, nobody knew who did it. Nobody wanted to believe something like that could happen in Riverdale. Fingers kept getting pointed, and secrets started coming out.

[A pause.]

Then they thought they'd found someone, eventually. The evidence didn't add up, but -

[He chews on his lip for a moment before continuing.]

He fit the 'profile'. It was an easy answer.

[quickpersuader]

[Kino gives a slow nod. Rousing suspicion in a small town... They've all been seeing some of that lately.]

Who was that?

[burgerprince]

FP.

[Is the name that comes out first, before he realizes that, to Kino, that'd mean nothing.]

My dad.

[quickpersuader]

[It doesn't mean anything, no. But Kino's expression doesn't show much surprise at the explanation, either.]

Did he do it?

[burgerprince]

No.

[The response is immediate.]

He was involved in the cleanup, but he didn’t do it. Not that anyone really wanted to listen.

[quickpersuader]

[That gets a very small frown out of the traveler, eyebrows shifting ever so slightly closer.]

Did they ever find the real culprit?

[burgerprince]

Yeah. Turns out it was Jason’s dad.

[Jughead frowns, and shares something he otherwise wouldn’t be.]

Threatened to do to me what he did to Jason, so that’s why my dad let himself take the fall.

[quickpersuader]

Blackmail.

[Not that uncommon, but never pleasant.]

Did they catch him?

[burgerprince]

Too late. He was already dead when they realised.

[quickpersuader]

[A slight tilt of the head.]

And who caused that one?

cw: suicide

[burgerprince]

He did. Hoped all his secrets would die with him, probably.

[quickpersuader]

It doesn't sound like he was successful hiding it, then.

[burgerprince]

If there’s any way to make sure all your dirty laundry gets dug up, it’s dying.

[quickpersuader]

At least there's that, then.

[Lives can't be brought back. But if nothing else, maybe they got some closure.]
