cartesianism | WEEK 3: April 15th

Third Week

The peaceful times are over. Moloch von Zinzer was murdered, and Nine was sentenced as his murderer. Everyone in Cartesio knows that.

Although life goes on, it seems the town of Cartesio isn't going to forget the tourists' transgressions. Not only they commited larceny in the cinema, they also murdered and executed in their town! It's no surprise their hospitality towards the visitors has cooled down considerably.

Not only they're maintaining a tense cordiality with them, they also have started talking behind the visitors' backs. All kinds of rumors are starting to sprout, yet nobody seems to be willing to say it to the tourists' faces. Talking directly to most passerby makes them distrustful, and nobody seems to want to be in close quarters alone with them.

It's only matter of time before the relationship between tourists and Cartesio starts degrading even further.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

[He nods, sifting through the clothes some more alongside her until he finds a white shirt with black buttons. He holds it up so she can see it.]

I think the contrast looks rather attractive, and at the same time not overly flashy, as you would prefer.

It doesn't need to be attractive. [Voice dry. But Kino looks over and nods, reaching for it.]

That will do. Have you seen any others like it?

[Kino has zero problem with getting a set of identical clothes.]

It's most likely to be in the same box. [He pulls out another one. This one has star-shaped buttons.]

...no. This is probably too flashy for you, and the shape makes them inconvenient to use for their proper purpose anyways.

[A quick assessment.]

Do you... usually work with fashion?

It's not my actual job, but it is quite important for social events to know what works and what does not. Both in terms of appearance and practicality.

What kinds of social events?

[Kino's already thinking wealthy based on attire and such, but. It's always better to ask.]

Parties, mostly those exclusive to the nobility. Some business meetings, as well.

On behalf of your family?

Indeed. I am their only son, after all.

So you have a lot of responsibilities, then.

Indeed. Especially with the career I've chosen.

And that would be?

Ah, I've mentioned it before, right-I'm part of the International Police, as are my parents. Our current assignment involves plenty of traveling to best evade Humanity's Wake.

I'm not familiar with any of those things. Ah... International Police and Humanity's Wake, that is.

Well, we International Police simply have jurisdiction in all regions, mostly to pursue criminal groups that span multiple regions. Humanity's Wake is one such group-they believe that humans have no need of Pokemon, and seek to get rid of them to "free" us. [His voice gets contemptuous near the end.]

"Free?"

[For someone who's already hazy on all the workings of his world, this is not making things much clearer.]

From having to rely on Pokemon. It's true that we could probably survive independently of them, but their presence is tied into our society, and even the ones who do not work are cherished companions.

...Then why wouldn't you want to have them? It's a little like pets, isn't it?

Precisely. Humanity's Wake are fools and terrorists, who think nothing of threatening children if they feel it serves their agenda. Our mission is to oppose them however possible.

I wonder what makes them so passionate about their cause.

[There's always something - even if it's unsavory.]

We haven't really had any opportunity for civil conversation with them, unfortunately. Even Liam hasn't gotten much from reading their minds. We'd probably have to track down someone in a higher leadership position for that.

[Hm?]

One of your members can read minds?

Indeed. Liam is both a telepath and a telekinetic. He's quite an accomplished psychic at such a young age, too.

I see.

Sounds unpleasant.

He's grown used to it over time. And he has improved at controlling his ability.
