Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

[here they are again. Osomatsu pulls out the thing he found, which has been transferred to a plastic baggie by now. he sets it on his podium. everyone’s talking about the vandalism, and the dead body. and here he is, sharing his slice of nothing]

I’m only bringing this up ‘cause I thought it was weird an’ it stuck out, but there was fresh crushed pulp from an orange lying near one of the trashed pews. [he taps the baggie with the tips of his fingers. embarrassing]

It would be too easy to assume whoever did it still smells like citrus, wouldn't it...?

Probably. It would be easier if we could ask the shopkeepers who's bought oranges recently...

If they were peeling an orange, maybe... At least under their fingernails might have, uh... residue, or something.

[quickpersuader]

We'll probably need to do a few checks anyway, so let's remember that.

[relieable]

Well, we looked at [and smelled????] shoes already... Should we look at hands now?

[quickpersuader]

Probably. And let's look for wounds while we're at it.

Do you want to check, or should I?

[oh............ this is something Osomatsu never thought he’d say or do, but]

...You already looked at something awful, earlier, didn’t you? I’ll do this.

[quickpersuader]

[A shrug. Kino's seen worse, but:]

Go ahead.

HAND CHECK

[relieable]

[still, he doesn’t think kids should be involved. poor Kino]

O-okay, uh. Suspe....cts...? We’re gonna do a hand check! Please show them to me!

[pecker]

Hmm. We got a food, and we got a poison.... poison orange?!

We did have a knifemop.

There really have been some strange combinations of items. It's like we're solving murders in a point-and-click adventure game.

But, I mean, it would explain why his mouth was all frothy like that.

Either that or someone was lacking in vitamin C. [they could’ve had a V8]

[pecker]

I'm actually wondering if the pulp was spat out or barfed up or something.

[unfashionably]

I think we'd see more signs of it if that's what happened.

[pecker]

Well, Bakugou-san's mouth... [but she just kind of trails off cause it's not like she looked at the pulp that closely.]

[unfashionably]

... I'm sorry. I know it's hard to hear, but it sounds like that's from being drowned.

[pecker]

O-Oh. I see...

[She considers this for a few moments.]

But don't you think he needed to be incapacitated somehow before that could happen? I mean, it's obvious how hard he was fighting with all the burned and destroyed things. To drown him the killer had to drag him to that spot and also hold him down. Maybe they chose water because of all the fire, but that can't have been easy in the first place.

Oh, I didn’t think about that. [he looks down at the pulp he saved. was it just crushed? could it have been chewed? is there any way to tell?]

[ It's pretty messy due to having been crushed, but it's not any grosser than what you'd expect from that. Safe to assume it hasn't been in a human mouth. ]

Ah, I guess that just looks normal pulp... whoopsie.

It was a good guess, though! But I don’t think the bottle of poison was opened yet.

Did Bakugou even like oranges?

Well he wore a lot of orange.
