Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

Yeah, I do. Sayin' this required someone quick on their feet doesn't help me at all, but I already told you guys. I'm a close-range fighter without my magic. There's no way I wouldn't have gotten hit if I fought Bakugou.

...Right. I know you said your magic or whatever is basically useless because it's been weakened a lot, but - mind telling me what it can do, here?

Nothing besides make me an easy target in the dark.

If you think it'll help, sure.

[ So, have you seen DBZ? You've probably seen DBZ. That's what it looks like. He literally starts glowing and his hair stands up a little straighter. ]

[It's clear from her expression she finds that incredibly weird, but!!]

Is that what makes you stronger and faster, or are you both of those things even normally?

[unfashionably]

Both of them normally. This? As far as I can tell, I don't have access to any of my other magic like this.

[robitussin]

Okay. So... I know it isn't working right here or whatever, but back home, what did looking all weird like that allow you to do differently?

[unfashionably]

Different stuff. My element is light, so beams. Some small, some big. Using it to enhance my attacks. Light is pretty versatile.

[snideper]

Glowing like that would sure light up the darkness around you.

[unfashionably]

Yeah, it would. But it would only make me a target, not other people. The thing about being a tiny speck of light in darkness is? It makes everything around you seem darker, not brighter.

[snideper]

Lights on, lights off; use that superhuman speed of yours to get out of the way while Bakugou's still getting that explosion of his ready, and now you know where he is.

[ Guess this is what he's doing today, defending Bakugou's combat prowess. ]

The brat would have gotten a hit in if that's the case. He wouldn't miss an easy target repeatedly.

[snideper]

Factor in the superhuman speed. Lights on, lights out right away; that hothead is already firing off an explosion but this guy's already well out of the way.

You want to be more specific?

[snideper]

Superhuman senses, too. I'm good at that kind of stuff, sure, but I'm only human.

[you can see how much she actively, absolutely LOATHES saying ANYTHING that puts down her own skills even a LITTLE]

[Don't mind him enjoying this.]

I'm not denying that I fit the bill too. You might not like it, I might not like it, but I do fit. The problem is, I think you did it.

[snideper]

I think I'm the easiest person for you to pin this on because out of everyone, my skill set is most similar to yours.

I haven't been sure who did it, and I honestly don't really care, but you're not making yourself look great.

[unfashionably]

I think you'll pin the blame on any one of the people on that list, no matter who it is. But I don't think you're going to confess either, no matter what anyone says to you or how hard they point.

I'm not confessing because I didn't do it. I'm not gonna pretend like I care who did, but it wasn't me!

Sorry, but... I don't believe you.

You're putting on enough appearances. The phony "apology" isn't necessary.
