Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

We've been talking in circles about candlesticks and the mess in the chapel for ages and we're not getting anywhere. Let's talk about what was in the junkyard. The unopened poison, motor oil and the full box of matches that were hidden in a car at the top of a pile.

Anyone work out what the purpose of all that was?

Perhaps it's a red herring? Gods know such a large group has a tendency to talk in circles.

[ a beat ]

Or maybe someone's plan went awry, and they had to resort to backup.

Considering the matches and crap were used last week, yeah.

Can motor oil be used as an explosive the same way gasoline can...? I admit I don't know much about chemicals.

[ Neither does he, but thankfully he does know about fire. ]

Doesn't work well. It'd need to be superheated.

Then I do wonder what the intended use of the oil was...what is it used for, exactly? If there was some kind of machine they could use to commit a murder, it would run on gasoline and not motor oil, yes...?

It's across the town from the church... It isn't like it would be very easily accessible.

The orange peel was found there, wasn't it? And then the pulp was in the chapel. It could have been their "base of operations," I suppose.

Have we...figured out what the purpose of the orange was, at all? I admit I'm still a bit confused on why it was there, unless the culprit needed a mid-work snack...

Forgive me if that's stupid, but... that might just be it, right? The murder was late at night and they might have been waiting for a bit. Having a snack is reasonable.

The pulp from the orange was found, though. Hmm...do oranges have any valuable properties to them? Such as how lemon juice can be used as a cleaning agent.

[ Speaking of eating. ]

Sting wouldn't have left the peel. I've seen him eat a plastic spoon.

It'd be more convincing as a red herring if the bottles had been opened.

[But he's frowning, considering.]

If they were forced to use a back up plan and kill Katsuki in a messier way... you'd think they might've gone back to clean this up. Unless there was a reason they couldn't. Perhaps due to injuries.

We already looked all of you over for that though...

[Keith's shaking his head.]

That doesn't mean anything. Eric can heal injuries.

Wouldn't that make him an accomplice?

I don't think Clarisse saw a point in cleaning it up. Going back to the junkyard would mean going out of her way again and the only way it ties to her is profiling.

Point.

You really can't decide if I'm a genius or an idiot, can you? If you're going to try to drive the point home that I'm so good at this, you're pretty dumb to start arguing that I was too lazy to clean up after myself.

Maybe... I mean, last week, Nine went after someone who just happened to be there. Maybe the killer didn't target anyone specifically, and thought they'd come across someone easier to take down than Bakugou? They could have been hoping they could easily poison them or use the motor oil and matches to do something.

[But.]

That doesn't account for why it's away from the actual crime scene.

...like the kid said, a lot of people hung out in the junkyard.

[ Which is why he went to be broody in the graveyard tyvm. His last interaction with natalie may have been to threaten to set her hair on fire, but his tone is flat like usual. ]

I still don’t know where the poison came from. Is there a place in town that sells it? [or was it someone’s regain? did he just miss it?]

........ Why? I mean, I can understand if someone could get it at the hunting shop. But...
