Week 5: April 29th - May 3rd

Fifth Week

Everything's getting worse. Rose Nylund and Frasier Crane murdered Jughead Jones during the event Jughead worked so hard to organize. Given some of the townspeople were in attendance, it didn't give a good impression -- if the visitors did this when trying to be good people and get along with Cartesio, then how will they behave once they get into destroying everything? The cruel method of Jughead's death also left everyone quite horrified, too.

That may be why it's no surprise the town's quiet unrest is slowly turning into real, tangible fury.

During the week, from time to time stones break some of the windows of the motel, looking outside shows a random passerby running away. Graffiti is left on the walls: 'SEE IF YOU LIKE THIS' 'MURDERERS' 'YOU'RE GOING TO DESTROY US ALL', and other similar messages. Some of the store owners hesitate when the visitors approach, but they don't refuse service because money is always nice.

The Sergeant's pervasive influence is starting to cover not only you, but also the entire town of Cartesio. After all, everything that's happening to you and the motel? It's the result of what you and the other visitors have done.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

They were all watching, besides. Not sure that being crueler than necessary is a good plan.

It wasn't for him. I killed her that way because I wanted to.

[There's a difference, and that difference is simply that Kino is a selfish person.]

And after the article, and then the murder at the show... I don't think there's any way to repair that opinion.

[robitussin]

Yeah, but why did you want to?

[She sighs.]

That doesn't mean we can't at least try to make it better.

[quickpersuader]

[Again:] Because I was angry. She caused much more pain than necessary when she killed him. Everyone dies someday, but I didn't want to show mercy to someone who can ask for a 'quick and painless death' when they couldn't even learn how to provide that for their own victim.

I'm not a good enough person to do such a thing.

[robitussin]

...Okay, I'm not that torn up that she got hurt more than necessary, but trying to say you did it because you're not a good person is bullshit.

[quickpersuader]

You think so?

[robitussin]

I mean, like...

[She pauses, trying to decide how to say this.]

Isn't saying "I did it because I'm not a good person" just acting like you don't have any control over what you do?

[quickpersuader]

That's not what I mean. I'm not saying "I'm a bad person" to excuse my actions.

I'm saying I'm a bad person because I chose to do it.

[robitussin]

[That, at least, she seems to accept a little easier. All the same...]

Maybe just... try to choose to do something a little different if something similar happens again?

[quickpersuader]

It's my preference to make it quick, normally. But I can't guarantee I won't do it again depending on what happens.

[It's not so much that Kino lacks emotions. She's simply very comfortable acknowledging what feelings she does have.]

[robitussin]

[She shakes her head.]

I wasn't really asking for a guarantee. You don't seem like the kind of person who would accept that.

[quickpersuader]

[Kino smiles again at that.]

I don't. There's only so much I can do, whether I want to or not.

[robitussin]

Yeah. As long as you, like... make an effort, I'm good.

[But, hm.]

Did it make you feel better?

[quickpersuader]

A little.

[Not gonna lie about that.]

[robitussin]

[There's an exhale, but it's to fill the silence more than anything that conveys a specific emotion.]

...At least there's that.

[quickpersuader]

I prefer to minimize the deaths I cause... But there's still some that are more satisfying than others.

[And Rose, unfortunately, falls squarely in that category.]

[robitussin]

[After a moment, she nods.]

...Yeah, I can't exactly say that I'm going to be shedding any tears over either of them.

[quickpersuader]

[Kino gives a sigh of her own, looking up to the sky.]

I can understand wanting to leave. I can even understand wanting immortality. But they didn't even...

[robitussin]

They're idiots.

[Flatly.]

I just wish... Okay, this might sound fucked up, but like - Moloch died because he was trying to build a radio to contact someone on the outside. Bakugou died because he was outside on patrol. Jughead died because he was running a show to make us all look better. Can't someone ever, like, target someone who isn't actively trying to improve shit for us?

[quickpersuader]

It's a little "fucked up."

[But Kino's voice holds no judgment.]

Would it make you feel better if someone like that was the next victim?

[Because Kino really doubts they'll be stopping now.]

[robitussin]

...No.

[She says, running a hand through her hair.]

Of course it wouldn't. I just wish - I don't know.

[quickpersuader]

That the people who died deserved it?

[robitussin]

No, I don't want... to be surrounded by people who deserve to die.

[She sighs.]

I just all of us were, like - better at fixing this. I mean, god, we all tried our best and they still wrote a huge newspaper article about how we're lying pieces of shit anyways.

[quickpersuader]

I don't think any of us are going to outwit the Sergeant when it comes to our relationship with the town.

[He's just got too much of an advantage there.]

Not like this, anyway.

[robitussin]

Maybe not, but like... There's enough riding on it that I can't just give up.

[She sighs.]
