Week 5: April 29th - May 3rd

Fifth Week

Everything's getting worse. Rose Nylund and Frasier Crane murdered Jughead Jones during the event Jughead worked so hard to organize. Given some of the townspeople were in attendance, it didn't give a good impression -- if the visitors did this when trying to be good people and get along with Cartesio, then how will they behave once they get into destroying everything? The cruel method of Jughead's death also left everyone quite horrified, too.

That may be why it's no surprise the town's quiet unrest is slowly turning into real, tangible fury.

During the week, from time to time stones break some of the windows of the motel, looking outside shows a random passerby running away. Graffiti is left on the walls: 'SEE IF YOU LIKE THIS' 'MURDERERS' 'YOU'RE GOING TO DESTROY US ALL', and other similar messages. Some of the store owners hesitate when the visitors approach, but they don't refuse service because money is always nice.

The Sergeant's pervasive influence is starting to cover not only you, but also the entire town of Cartesio. After all, everything that's happening to you and the motel? It's the result of what you and the other visitors have done.

In the lobby of the motel there's a few more brochures, and the maps have been updated once again.

...I mean, I’m not surprised, but now I feel like I should ask where.

[She gives an amused noise that’s not quite a laugh.]

Yeah. There’s nothing like trying to catch a murder to get my appetite up.

[amburere]

[ His smirk and the downward tilt of his head says it all—go ahead and ask Natalie. ]

Guess we're all out of batshit old ladies to drag trials out, so you might not need it this week. 

[robitussin]

[Upon seeing that look, there's only another brief hesitation, before:]

Okay. Where's the worst place you've got a piercing?

[And then she rolls her eyes, more at the situation than him.]

Yeah, maybe. Lucky us.

[amburere]

The luckiest. [ Hm...he plays with his collar while he thinks. Really none of the places he got a piercing in were upstanding institutions but- ah yeah that one's gotta be the worst. ]

Back of a moving pickup truck. By a girl who was trying to figure how accurate her quirk was.

[robitussin]

That... sounds like a really horrible combination.

[A pause.]

What happened?

[amburere]

[ He points to one of the piercings in his right ear. ]

Her aim was pretty bad. But I didn't throw up.

[robitussin]

[She grimaces at the thought, but then there's a small pause.]

I wouldn't have thought you're the kind of person to let someone else do that to you. Was it a while ago?

[amburere]

Several years back. [ Shrug. ]

Didn't care, stopped me from getting carsick.

[robitussin]

You must have trusted her a lot. She could have taken out one of your eyes.

[amburere]

No.  Don't even remember her name. [ If he was capable of shrugging more emphatically, he would. ]

[robitussin]

[That takes her by surprise, and there's a small pause in response.]

So you're just the type to let random people you barely know give you piercings?

[amburere]

Not now. Back then no real reason was reason enough. [ His words are always lazy, but here it's more pronounced than usual. ]

[robitussin]

[There's something in her expression that makes it clear that struck a chord with her somehow, but it makes her wonder all the same.]

Was that before the whole League thing started?

[amburere]

I've only been part of the League for... 'bout half a year. [ He seems to notice that, judging by the slight tilt of his head. ]

[robitussin]

Yeah? What were you doing before that?

[The same tone of light curiosity lingers on.]

[amburere]

[ A pause before he responds. ]

Oh, you know. Wandering, loitering, living on the edges of society—all that fun stuff.

[robitussin]

...Sounds like a blast.

[But there's that characteristic note of concern in her tone all the same. Next, a question she might regret asking:]

What about your family?

[amburere]

Doesn't hold a candle to my life now. [ Hey look, there's a terrible pun accompanied by a terrible smile. That absolutely breaks when he hears what she asks next. Usually his scars, staples, and grin are the most attention grabbing aspects of his appearance, but right now his eyes eclipse them all. His stare is frigid and piercing, nothing like she's ever seen before even back at the bakery. ]

Wrong question.

[robitussin]

[She only meets his gaze for a moment before she looks away, unsettled. Quietly:]

Okay, I'll back off. Sorry.

[amburere]

[ Good. A few tension filled seconds tick by until he speaks again, idly stretching like that last question was never asked.  ]

What 'bout you? Were you enjoying a nice boring life before you wound up here?

[robitussin]

[A small snort, amused with an undercurrent of bitterness.]

I wish. Still, compared to everyone else here... I guess that's not inaccurate.

[amburere]

But it wasn't your normal. [ And that's what matters, isn't it? He's apparently up for listening if she feels like talking. ]

[robitussin]

...Nah, it wasn't that different from my normal, actually. It's just that my normal is complete bullshit.

[She's not sure what makes it easier to say that with him than it is with most other people here; it might be the lack of sympathy or pity she's expecting. She's tired of that kind of reaction.]

[amburere]

More bullshit than a lizard trying to drive with his "mad GTA" skills? [ No sympathy or pity here, that's for sure. ]

[robitussin]

[She shakes her head.]

A vastly different kind of bullshit than all your... superpower stuff.
