Week 5: Trial

      

Last time it was at dawn. Now it's at sunset. The Sergeant gave everyone plenty of time to investigate and gather evidence, and now that everyone entered the courtroom, he slammed his gavel.

"I can sense a few of you are feeling rather hostile. Remember you're in a courtroom, and you're being watched by everyone in town"

People's opinions of the visitors are already very low, but there's no need to feed them further with a brawl in the courtroom -- or so the Sergeant thinks. There are more podiums draped in black now. Five more people died, seventeen people are alive. How many will be left once the trial is over?

"This time we have three victims in total. Millium Orion, Cian Reikado, and Azura were the unfortunate victims last night, and now you shall debate and decide who is responsible for this.

These are your suspects. Vote for as many as you think are responsible for these crimes"

[Franciscus stares at his own photo. He looks like he's about to yell again, then composes himself.]

I'm not the culprit. And I do have an alibi. Kinzie can confirm I was with her all last night.

Is that somethin' you usually do?

Not usually. But it's something we've been discussing. [As he shifts, his sleeve slips down a bit, revealing rope marks on his wrists.]

[unfashionably]

[ He raises an eyebrow. ] So this is the first time you've spent the night in someone else's company since you've been here?

[silvertongueheir]

Yes. Though I've had my Pokemon with me in my room since I got them back as well.

[amburere]

Convenient.

[unfashionably]

... All right, thanks for answering. I've got a couple of other questions, but I'll start with your Pokemon. Can you tell me more about them?

[marmoron]

All last night. But what were you doing on Friday morning?

[silvertongueheir]

I was cleaning up in my own room. I didn't leave the hotel before we found Millium's body.

[marmoron]

Cian was killed early Friday morning. If you were by yourself at that time, that means you don't have an alibi.

[silvertongueheir]

How early exactly? I was still in Kinzie's room when the sun came up, though I didn't check the exact time.

[marmoron]

6AM.

[The time referenced in the note.]

But it does't really matter does it? I don't know if Kinzie's willing to lie for you.

[robitussin]

That's nice.

[From the cutting tone in her voice, it doesn't sound like she's putting too much stock in it.]

What did you think of the offer he gave us on Tuesday?

[silvertongueheir]

As I said during the meeting, it was tempting. But I wouldn't have gone for it, in the end. Someone else would have to die in my place, after all.

[robitussin]

I mean, everybody is going to be able to say that really easily. Did it bring anyone to mind?

[silvertongueheir]

[He nods.] It did. I already answered Kino about that.

[robitussin]

[A while later:]

Hey, I have another question. Your... I don't know if you want me to call it a pet or not. Can you tell me more about it and what it can do?

[quickpersuader]

If you did go for the motive, who would you have brought back?

[silvertongueheir]

Probably someone from here. [His eyes glance towards Sakura.] I'm fortunate enough to not have lost anyone back home.

[quickpersuader]

I see. Then for you, if you had taken the Sergeant up on his offer, it wouldn't be to trade a life for one who had died and was beyond your reach, but just to try to escape here with at least one other person safely.

[silvertongueheir]

[A slow nod.] No one deserves to be trapped here. And to think of it in the most callous way, the math would even out. [The deaths of two innocents for the freedom of two.]

[quickpersuader]

You're right. Mathmatically speaking, this is the least number of lives that could be traded for the most number of escapees... in the case of a murder.

[robitussin]

...Sounds like you thought of it for a while. How close are you and Sakura?

[odasaku]

Really? As interpol, you’ve never lost anyone you wanted to bring back?

[silvertongueheir]

My main team is smaller. And most of our opponents aren't aiming to kill humans, and our Pokemon can be recalled if they're in danger of death. [Look, he's from Pokemon world and a tabletop world. It's super fucking hard to die in Pokemon tabletop world.]
