Week 6: Investigation

At around 2 in the morning, a steady rain of hail started to cover the town of Cartesio. The night continued, however, with the motel unbothered, aside from the plink-plink on the roof and windows.

This morning, you'll find the weather's started to let up, though the streets are still blanketed by hail. Mercifully, that's all that's outside the motel this morning. No corpses, no robot remains. That alone should make you feel better, right?

But no. It seems...the town's very alert this morning. There's a strange energy in the air, not just from the Sergeant's horrible threat. Something's off in Cartesio, and you probably recognize that feeling. This has happened four times before, after all.

[starting here, Osomatsu is going to look around near the body for anything out of the ordinary first. so there was a fire?]

[cartesio]

[ Oh, was there ever. It's mostly the immediate area that's damp and smoky. Thank goodness not all the books were water damaged...

If Osomatsu's looking for evidence of fire, what he'll notice first of all is a broken oil burning lamp, on top of the bookcase pinning Dazai. One of these things. Old, fancy. Only the base is here. ]

[Osomatsu's not even sure of what this is! but he notices that it is broken, and that it's missing a top. he'll keep that in mind as he looks for more evience. does it look like the oil in here was the cause of the fire?]

[cartesio]

[ It's possible! Considering the fire's centralized around this area, it's a reasonable assumption to make. ]

[relieable]

[okay! we won't rule that out. Osomatsu continues to look in the same area, going carefully. he looks up, and down around the bookcase. in fact, now that it's been moved, anything odd about it? it was pretty heavy, right?]

[cartesio]

[ It was heavy, that's right! Judging from how many books are scattered around Dazai's head (all burned, RIP), it was probably very top-heavy, to be specific. Osomatsu will, looking at the bookcase, find two things sort of odd about it, one more centered around the broken oil burning lamp and one around the bottom of the bookcase in general. Where would he like to look first? ]

[hmmm. going to check near the broken oil lamp first, since he's been looking around there already. what's odd about this?]

[cartesio]

[ Well odd was the wrong word, my apologies there--more here's where signs of fire would be. What he'll find is the fire damage spreading outward from the back of the bookcase, where the oil lamp rests. That seems to be the most burnt section of the bookcase, and where the fire began. ]

[interesting... that raises a few questions about what exactly happened here. he follows the damage down to the bottom of the bookcase to see what is there]

[cartesio]

[ Now, here's where something's odd. On the back of the bookcase, the damage is consistent with starting where the broken oil lamp is. Not surprising. However, if Osomatsu looks on the front of the bookcase, he'll find a spot of heavier fire damage, much more than the section on the back. ]

[uhhh... so where did the fire start? he doesn't know, but he's going to get in real close to that scorch mark. is it like the fire burned through the bookcase? or are there two different fire-related things happening here? is it possible to tell what happened first?]

[cartesio]

[ The fire did not burn through the bookcase. Which happened first, however... That's hard to tell. ]

[relieable]

[okay, crazy. anything else around here, aside from the scorch marks and weird lamp thingy? how about on the floor, where all the damaged books are?]

[cartesio]

[ Mostly just a lot of sad damaged books.

You've got most everything that would be around the body, but if you branch out a little, you'll be able to find more evidence around the rest of the children's section.

For example, a ways from the bookcase you'll be able to see something glinting, in the light. ]

[yeah, he's definitely moving elsewhere, since Keith is turning over the body right about now. yikes. time to check the rest of the children's section. why was Dazai here?

when he looks up, he catches the glint out of the corner of his eyes, and he makes his way over to that area]

[cartesio]

[ It's glass! In fact, as he moves, Osomatsu will find a few spots of glass, surrounding the bookcase in a rough circle. ]

[UM. OKAY? he crouches down to get a better look, muttering something about how this is a messy crime scene. save him.

anyway, is there a way to tell where this glass is from? it is surrounding the bookcase, but it must lead from somewhere, right?]

[cartesio]

[ It actually doesn't lead anywhere, except for in a circle. In fact, it seems to cross over with...well, more glass that also lays spread out, around one of the few still-standing tables. ]

[hmmmm. might as well follow the glass trail. he'll take a piece from the circle, and a piece from the floor by the table to compare if they are from the same thing. he still doesn't know where this glass came from, and it only makes the scene more jumbled in his mind.

looking at the bigger picture, too, was there more furniture knocked over?]

[cartesio]

[ This separate "trail" he'll also find in a circle. It's honestly very confusing, but at least this one's around that table.

A lot of furniture was knocked over, Osomatsu. Tables, chairs... Someone put up one hell of a fight here. ]

[relieable]

[a fight that ended in the children's section, then? geez. he needs to make a list of all this evidence. there's something really off about the way the glass has fallen, but he can't put his finger on what it is. he does glance up near the ceiling to see if any lightbulbs fell down.

and then he's continuing to follow the mess]

[cartesio]

[ To clarify, the fight seems to mostly have taken place in the children's section. It's centralized here, though some overturned chairs and tables lead from the front of the library.

There's no evidence of falling lightbulbs, no. However, in following the debris he'll find something near that still standing table! Something in the wall. ]

[relieable]

[no falling lightbulbs. what a mystery this glass is. he looks around the area a bit more and finally spots that thing on the wall. that's... weird... he gets closer. what is it?]

[cartesio]

[ A bullet hole! It's actually right behind one of those oil burning lamps Osomatsu loves so much...though this one is also broken, both top and base smashed. ]

[relieable]

[FANTASTIC. Osomatsu pales at the sight of the hole, but he's at least looking at it. he doesn't know anything about bullet holes, or sizes of bullets, but he will look around for more, or casings, or things like that.

he'll also pick up that broken lamp and check it over. maybe that's where the glass came from]
