Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

This week's special in the diner is lemon pie made with love (and a top-secret recipe)

[Luckily for Cian, Millium is actually mid-shark plaster for a change, so all Millium has to do is peek over her shoulder to see who's talking to her and flash Cian a sunny smile.]

Do you do crafts things like this a lot?

[ Normally, Cian means. Everyone here is so different from where she came from, it's fascinating just hearing about their daily lives. ]

Umm... not too often, no. Art's never really been my thing.

[That might have been obvious from the fact that the drawing is truly horrific.]

I was in the cooking club back in school. That's way more fun than drawing, if you ask me. But!

They said they were getting rid of the shark alert!

[And can't Cian see that's important?]

[ Look, for something hand-drawn Cian thinks it looks pretty good. Her standards may be nonexistent, but she'll stick to them. ]

You were one of the ones who came here before us, right...? Was the shark alert important?

[doublelammy]

[Oh, Cian. You are an angel.]

Nah, I don't think so. Just some guy was really into sharks for some reason.

But it's basically the only fun part of the paper, y'know? Who wants to read about weather and stuff like that when we could be reading about sharks?

[integratedsoul]

But there never were sharks before, you were just reading about like... the absence of sharks.

[ .... ]

... so from that point of view, this is an improvement.

[doublelammy]

But it was still more interesting than the weather.

...Right! See, now you get it.

[She grins ear to ear.]

I'm just making this place exciting! That's all.

You really think it needs more excitement...?

[ That is... pretty surprising, actually. ]

Even with all of us being kidnapped and told to kill each other?

...Yeah, but that kind of excitement sucks.

[Like. Obviously???]

Oh...

[ 'Excitement' as a term itself carries a bit of a negative connotation to Cian, but the distinction makes sense. ]

What excitement is good then? Aside from sharks.

[doublelammy]

Happy things! Fun things! Like festivals and getting to see new places and meeting up with people you like and trying new foods and reading about things you don't hear about all the time!

[At least, Millium seems genuinely excited by all of these things.]

Murder and stuff like that... sure, I guess it's exciting. It makes my chest feel all weird. But it's sad and scary, not fun at all.

[ Awww, okay, that's cute kinds of excitement on a level that Cian can understand much better than sharks. Sharks are neither here not there. She smiles softly. ]

Our stay here may at least hit a few of those points then... I've seen and heard more new than I ever thought I would in just the last few days.

[doublelammy]

Yeah! That's the way you gotta look at it.

'Cause otherwise, we're all just gonna get real bored and sad, and who wants to live like that? And if we don't wanna live anymore, doesn't that mean we just let Sarge win?

[integratedsoul]

[ It's possible to live even without wanting to Cian thinks, but Millium is a child and she really doesn't need to hear such negative thoughts like. ever. ]

That's true, good thinking. Then... do you mind telling me what your favourite new thing you've seen or learned here is?

[Even had Cian said it, it's doubtful it would have gotten more than a "Eh, yeah, guess that's true" out of Millium... but that's neither here nor there.]

Umm...

[She taps her lips in thought.]

Oh! I learned how to use the jukebox in the diner! It has all sorts of music I've never heard before.

Oh, that sounds fun! I'd like to listen sometime.

[ Music is nice and probably not dangerous. Unless you let her discover metal. ]

My favourite thing is... hmm, I think the guestbook. People tell me it's weird that this information exists, but I haven't ever seen important things noted down on paper like that.

[Friday top-level: Millium plays a 24 hour marathon of that Batman song from the Lego movie on the diner jukebox.]

Huh? Does your place not have paper or something?

[integratedsoul]

[ Have mercy, Millium. ]

It exists, but it's not used all that much anymore. Everything's virtual these days, especially information. Some older people still like to print out information... or hobbyists... but it really doesn't happen a lot.

[doublelammy]

[Why would she want to do that...?]

Vir...tual...?

[Sorry, she's lost. JRPG Germany, they use trains, what is this.]

Oh... uhm... uuuhmmm....

[ Give her a second to work out how to explain this... ]

Well, it's like... there is information and you can transfer it through the air? You just need a bit of technology and you can make it appear on a screen or directly in your eye, with the correct contact lenses.

[doublelammy]

[At least Millium's familiar with the concept of contact lenses, although normally they're not very technologically advanced. They just make Machias not blind as a bat without his glasses.]

Huh... that sounds really cool!

I think we're starting to get things like that. We have the orbal net, and I know there's a ton o' data on there even if I don't really know how to use computers all that well. But they're pretty big n' clunky, it's a lot easier to just get what you need out of a book mosta the time...

[ There's a lot of enthusiastic nodding at the mention of a net and computers. ]

Yes, it's net and computer stuff all over! Books don't really exist physically anymore unless you're a collector, but you can get the same thing on the net too, content-wise.

Wow... I don't even think I can imagine our world like that.

Something that can get into the orbal net, it's gonna take up prolly more room than we had on our desks back in school. Are things smaller where you're from, or are there just big ol' boxes n' antennas everywhere?

... oh wow. That sounds so inconvenient, I can't even imagine living like that.

Everything is really small in my world. [ Cian raises her hand a little, looking at her own skin. ]

A lot of data is simply stored on my body right now, there's technology doing it within me.

Within you...? But you're human, aren't you?
