Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

This week's special in the diner is lemon pie made with love (and a top-secret recipe)

[ She gratefully accepts the water and takes a few sips before answering. It's good to wash the taste out of her mouth. ]

A bit of both... I guess? I'm not vegetarian, but meat isn't eaten very often where I'm from. Neither is spice of any kind.

I didn't anticipate just how different food here would be.

That sounds kind of depressing.

[No meat, he can understand that. No spices, though? That'd make everything so bland]

[ Cian pauses here for a moment and her reply comes out a bit more quiet. ]

... it does, doesn't it? A lot of people have never tasted anything else though, so to them it doesn't seem so bad.

And those who were alive when the world was difference have accepted it all the same.

Why did things turn out like that?

[He imagines there was a reason why people decided food needed to be bland!]

There was a huge war, half a century ago. Most of humanity died in it. We call it the Maelstrom. After that, society was rebuild to preserve all human life and prevent something like this from happening again.

So everything is healthy now. Healthy and kind and... unexciting, I guess?

[ Eat boring food = preserve human life! Welcome to Harmony. ]

I don't really see how making food be bland helps at all to preserve human life. Whoever thought of this didn't think things through.

[And if something unreasonable as this is common, then a lot other unreasonable things must be happening too. Moloch's pretty sure this zealous goal wouldn't be limited to just bland food]

At least it's not a bad goal.

I think the thought process is like... if the food has too much flavor, it excites people and people who get excited follow their urges more and then that might lead to murder.

[ Which, stated out loud, sounds absolutely ridiculous. Even more ridiculous than her society normally sounds. Cian has to concede she may just not be good at explaining it. ]

That's ridiculous. There are a thousand other things that can do that other than food.

[Your world sounds awful, Cian]

Did it work? Did it--is it as peaceful as it should be?

That's why food isn't the only thing regulated, of course.

[ She could go into it but also she'd be here all day. ]

And it worked. It's a place where you can go your whole life without seeing or feeling anything unpleasant. [ She doesn't sound very enthusiastic about it though. ]

... though my friend who travels a lot has told me that there are still war zones out there, in other places that haven't accepted the system.

That all sounds too good to be true. [Maybe not even that. Unpleasantness is inevitable] Are you happy?

[That's the best way to know if it works, in Moloch's opinion. How happy are you, Cian?]

[ Well. That's truly A Question, isn't it? ]

Happy enough. That works for most intents and purposes, right?

[For a moment he's not sure if she means the 'happy enough' part. After all, would someone unhappy admit it to a complete stranger? He's not going to press on, though]

At least you'll have the chance here to try stuff you haven't tried before. It's your chance, give it a try little by little.

It really is. I'd given up on every experiencing something like this, too...
