Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

This week's special in the diner is lemon pie made with love (and a top-secret recipe)

Is that your specialty around here?

[cartesio]

[ She'll get to making that, then. ]

I wouldn't really say I have a specialty, now... But, if what one of those kids, one of you tourist-types was saying is true, I suppose it'd have to be the lemon pie.

[browbeater]

Do you get a lot of tourists around here?

[he doesn't need the lemon pie, but he will take the chance to try and understand the situation?]

[cartesio]

[ She shakes her head. ]

Never. This is a special occasion for all of us, sort of.

[browbeater]

Do they usually go to other near-by cities?

[he pauses. 'special occasion'? need to work his way back to that one.]

[cartesio]

Well, the go to other cities, but none of them are nearby. We're a pretty isolated little town, but you know, it means everyone's all friendly with each other.

[browbeater]

How far's the closest city?

[he asks in the most polite, interested tone he can muster]

[cartesio]

[ She shrugs, back turned as she cooks at the griddle. ]

Never really thought to ask. We've got all we need here, after all.

[browbeater]

[... this is such a strange attitude to have about the world around you. Are there farms near-by that she gets all her food from? What about the hunting shop? This place is so tiny, and so isolated, he finds that hard to believe.]

Well, when's the last time you've had a special occasion of tourists visiting?

[cartesio]

Before all you all, and that bunch a few of you were with? Why, I can't even remember.

[browbeater]

[that's... strange.]

How did a town like this get founded anyway? It's so far out, and you don't get visitors often.

[cartesio]

How's anywhere get founded? Opportunity. [ A pause; he can probably just hear the smile in her voice. ] It was my grandparents and some friends, after their land had dried up. They were looking for a more fertile place to plant, and oh did they find one.

Cartesio's just about the best farming land you'll find, in these parts.

[browbeater]

[hmm...]

That's amazing to hear. So, your family is one of the founding families? What about the others?

[cartesio]

Oh, they're still around. Lot younger folk from them, but here and there. Some in the local industries, a few working farms, still.

[browbeater]

What are their names?

[also honestly-- the ham and cheese thing does smell pretty good actually.]

[cartesio]

Well... There's the firefighter family, the Carters. And that sweet dear who runs the flower shop, Martha Tanner. Oh, and the Bakers- they're all at the oil refinery.

[ You may notice the places she's mentioning, you haven't seen in town. ]

[browbeater]

Oh-- where can I find some of these places?

[yep, he realizes that]

[cartesio]

Just around town! The refinery's a little more out there, but everywhere else...why, they're all just a short walk from here.
