Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

This week's special in the diner is lemon pie made with love (and a top-secret recipe)

Are there other locals you were planning to talk to?

Yes. I want to talk to the person in charge of the newspaper, if we can find them.

[he exhales.]

I'm getting a serious "there is no war in Ba Sing Se" vibe from this place right now.

Ba Sing Se?

[Where is that.]

[browbeater]

... It's.

It's the capital of the Earth Kingdom, back home.

[he pauses.]

During the 100 year war, Ba Sing Se was under siege the whole time. But the government had told the whole city that there was nothing wrong. There was no war.

That's the feeling I'm getting from this place. Except maybe the phrasing should be, "Cartesio is a peaceful town."

[quickpersuader]

[Oh. Makes sense. Kino's head dips thoughtfully.]

So the townspeople here could be the result of propaganda or some form of brainwashing...

[browbeater]

Something like that. They're really quick to jump to the idea that we might be causing trouble, too.

[quickpersuader]

I'll try talking to people, too. ...Well, I was already planning on it anyway, to be honest. You can tell a lot about a place by seeing what the people are like.

[browbeater]

Yeah, I'm not getting a good feeling about this place just because of that.

[he closes his notebook.]

But I'll keep asking around.

On the surface, public order seems good, but that just means looking at how they enforce that.

[No traveler wants to get caught in dictatorships unawares; there are many signs worth looking into.]
