Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

Dunno what a clank is, but if you can build vehicles that'd be helpful in getting us out of here.

[But for now, he hands over the radio parts that he's identified. How's that for a start, Moloch?]

Nobody here seems to know. [He sure has noticed] It'd be easy if I could get an engine. This junkyard has a lot of stuff but I haven't seen an usable engine.

[marmoron]

So nothing looks fixable?

[Frustrating.]

You'd need a miracle. I know someone who'd be able to make them work, but she's not here.

[Moloch is just a normal person with a lot of knowledge, he's not a mad genius, therefore he can't do it]

There's all those...vehicles I have seen around town, but I'm not gonna steal a random engine from them.

[For obvious reasons, namely that being rude as hell]

[Figures. How is the stuff in the junkyard conveniently damaged to the point of being inaccessible for even actual mechanics to fix? Do they go through their junk to screen for this shit or what.]

It'd probably be easier to just steal the car.

[Just saying.]

Or offer to buy it from the owner.

I'm not stealing a car -- or the twelve or so cars we'd need. Also, we don't have money.

[Guess who hasn't deduced yet the debit card is for money? This guy. He thinks it's some sort of authorization key everyone takes, or some sort of ID. His world doesn't have anything like it, yeah]

[...That actually gets Keith to smile. Congrats?? You're the first one to make that happen.]

Then I'm glad to give you some good news. Money's the one thing we've got a lot of in this place.

[Moloch's eyes widen a bit] We do?

[First time he hears he doesn't have to worry about money!

[Show and tell time. Keith reaches into a pouch on hanging off his hip and removes his debit card.]

What'd you think this thing was?

[chiefminion]

My theory is that it was some sort of ID -- that all of us had a different one and we'd receive stuff based on who we were.

[It's not the best theory, but he had to come up with something. He wouldn't use it without at least that much]

[marmoron]

Depending on who wins the most favors with the Sergeant, you mean?

[Or is this some classist theory.... Not that it matters considering that's obviously not the case for their current situation, but he's curious.]

[chiefminion]

Something like that. Making us not be able to buy stuff would be a way to punish us if we disobey him.

[He wouldn't be surprised if someone particularly defiant finds themselves without money. True, everyone else could buy stuff for that person, but it'd still be rather inconvenient]

[marmoron]

Guess I should start stockpiling some food from the convenience store.

[An idle thought; it's not strictly necessary considering there are probably a few supplies from his bounty at the hunting store. Point being, he has about zero intentions of doing exactly as told.]

[chiefminion]

You plan to fight him that badly?

[He completely understands that and fully supports you, but on the other hand, that seems a little reckless]

[marmoron]

[There's a pause. A longer one. He's never really been good at listening to people, taking orders. A perpetual disciplinary case until fairly recently. But this goes beyond instinctive defiance or standing up to the Sergeant's bullshit.]

I need to get back as quick as possible. That's all.

[chiefminion]

You got something urgent to return to?

[Moloch makes a note to himself: don't be alone at night with Keith. Just in case]

[Understatement of the century. Keith drops eye contact, looking back down at the various scraps of metal littering the junkyard.]

[Finding yet another rusted knife amongst the junk, he gives it a firm tug by the handle and scowls.]

Why are there so many of these just lying around? How long have these been out here for them to have rusted this badly do you know?

[chiefminion]

Let me see.

[Moloch takes one of the knives that are loose in the pile, and takes a close look. He doesn't like what he sees]

This is stainless steel! It shouldn't be so rusty and damaged, despite the exposure to the elements. This may not be normal rust. [He turns it around, trying to take a good look at the corrosion] Everything in this junkyard is coated in the same thing. I dunno what made it happen.

[It's a bit too soon to know for sure, all he knows is that there must be a factor he hasn't considered yet]
