Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

In the guestbook it says has above average agility, and I think we've been overlooking the fact that agility plays a big part here.

Add to that, "if you give her an object she can probably figure out how to end a life with it" and a mention of fighting in low-vision conditions...

He was pretty fast on his feet. So whoever was after him woulda had to have been, too.

That makes sense to me. 'cause of all the destruction, I think we've been looking at things the wrong way. We got confused and thought "it must be someone strong" thanks to the debris. Maybe we should have been looking for someone fast instead.

...I mean, you also have superhuman speed written on your biography thing, don't you?

Yeah, I do. Sayin' this required someone quick on their feet doesn't help me at all, but I already told you guys. I'm a close-range fighter without my magic. There's no way I wouldn't have gotten hit if I fought Bakugou.

...Right. I know you said your magic or whatever is basically useless because it's been weakened a lot, but - mind telling me what it can do, here?

Nothing besides make me an easy target in the dark.

Superhuman senses, too. I'm good at that kind of stuff, sure, but I'm only human.

I'm not denying that I fit the bill too. You might not like it, I might not like it, but I do fit. The problem is, I think you did it.

I think I'm the easiest person for you to pin this on because out of everyone, my skill set is most similar to yours.

I haven't been sure who did it, and I honestly don't really care, but you're not making yourself look great.

I'm fast, but there's no way I was going near that. Like my thing says I'm normal and can't do any of this crazy shit some of you can.

Right now, there's only one person on here that I think did it. Clarisse, so... I guess what I'm saying is, I believe you didn't do it, man. I don't think Keith or Olympia did either.

Thanks... But I'm going to have to disagree with the Clarisse bit. Unless this is her messing shit up on purpose, I don't think she'd make as much mess.

That was a half-assed wound, not a fatal one. If there were all these explosions and all this fire, it would have added some light. I—can't say anything about the agility, I guess, but this is all circumstantial crap.

So was everything against Nine. I wanna point out, too? You're an assassin, if anyone knows how to kill without leaving much of a trace? It's you.

There sure was a trace, though—All the oil and matches, the poison, all halfway across the damn town. The...orange? [fuckin, why was there an orange] And you're ignoring it for guesswork.

I make for an easy scapegoat. I know that. You've got a vested interest in putting this on me, yourself.

The oil and matches were unopened, as far as I remember. They could easily have been planted by the killer as a throwback to Nine and Moloch, or been left around by someone else needing them for something. Bakugou wouldn't exactly have been able to fight nearly as well as the destruction suggests if he had been poisoned, or wouldn't have been able to fight at all if the dose was high enough.

No, the oil and matches actually make sense if it were you. Someone tried to pull some stuff together for any kind of kill they could manage. They didn't end up needing those things, so they didn't use them and left them in the junkyard. The orange might as easy as a distraction. For us or Bakugou, it doesn't matter which.

And if you really made for an easy scapegoat, everyone would've voted for you the second they saw your name up there. I don't think you're easy, Clarisse. The rest? You can point at me if you want to, but I didn't kill Bakugou.

Either I'm real good at killing real cleanly, or I set up a bunch of preparation far away from the place he actually died because I didn't know what I was doing. You get to pick one. The only reason I haven't been voted out yet is because of all this interest in finding his real killer, all this useless sentimentality—but boy, would everyone just love if it were me, so I'm easy to frame.

You can say that you didn't kill him all you want. So will I. But I'm an assassin—I go into a job knowing my target, knowing what they can do, and knowing exactly how I'm going to take care of them. I'm not about to grab whatever I can and figure it out when I get there.

This doesn’t sound like how an assassin would work. If she was really doing it, and if she’s as competent as she says she is, I think Bakugou would have been dead before he even noticed.

The brat was stupid, but he had good reflexes.

And nothing ever goes wrong when someone tries to assassinate another person, especially one with abilities they're not used to fighting against?

The chest wound might not have been fatal with whatever caused it even if it would have with another weapon, but combining it with his other wounds could have caused Bakugou to die.

[He had a head wound too, which could have knocked him out and caused him to bleed out]
