Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

I see.

[Olympia swipes her card, then gives the buttons a few experimental pokes to see what they do. Satisfied with the results, she starts paging through totally unfamiliar songs, and settles on "Octopus's Garden" as having an interesting-sounding title.]

[doublelammy]

[Millium just watches, hands behind her back and rocking on her heels. It seems she doesn't stay still very often.]

"Octopus's Garden," huh? I didn't know they were gardeners.

[carbide]

[Sitting still is for princesses, soldiers, robots, and trees. And Olympias, apparently, but she seems okay with having more active company.]

Neither did I. It must be an underwater garden.

[doublelammy]

[It's okay, Millium has more than enough energy to make up for the two of them.]

Oooh... I wonder what kinda things grow underwater. I've only really ever been swimming in the school's pool, so I haven't ever gotten to look myself...

[carbide]

There's actually quite a lot of plant life underwater. An octopus would have a lot to grow in a garden. Maybe you'll get to see someday.

[doublelammy]

Maybe.

I dunno, though. I don't think Gramps'll ever have a reason to send me on a mission like that. And even if he did, I dunno how much Lammy likes water...

[carbide]

[Things Olympia doesn't even slightly question: small girl sent on missions. That's the Etrian Odyssey way too, after all.]

Lammy?

[doublelammy]

Lammy's my friend. [She's starting to realize she needs to give more of an explanation than that.] He's basically... um... [She squints slightly, trying to remember the word.] a robutt? I think that's what other people keep saying.

[She tried.]

But anyway, yeah. He links up with me and we work together and smash all sortsa stuff. I never go on missions without him.

[A pause.]

'Cept this one, but since Gramps didn't send me on this one, I don't think it counts.

[carbide]

"Airgetlam." That was on your page in the guestbook.

[Fragments of that page may still be on the floor of the lodge.]

That referred to a puppet, though. This "Lammy" sounds like a person.

autocorrect is, in fact, the worst

[doublelammy]

Yeah. Lammy.

["Airgetlam" is way too long. How do you expect her to bother with saying all that? Effort. Besides, Lammy is way cuter.

As to Lammy being a person, she shrugs.]

I dunno what he is, really. I just know we're linked and he breaks things when I want 'im to. But I know they've called me the "Silver Puppeteer," back home, so I dunno.

[Oh, that's a little disappointing. ]

Still, it's impressive either way. Robots are advanced technology.

[doublelammy]

Yeah. Stuff like that... it's way beyond me.

I dunno what all goes into making things like Lammy or me. I don't have to. I just gotta do what Gramps says, and anything else isn't really important.

[carbide]

Making things like you? Are you something unusual?

[What's tact? Sounds like some kind of bird.]

[doublelammy]

[A shrug. It's cool, she doesn't have any of that either.]

I just know I'm built to certain specs and I can link up with Lammy. Past that, I don't think I'm too different from most people here.

[carbide]

You're human, then?

[Either way she's clearly the most interesting person here.]

[doublelammy]

Basically, yeah. An artificial one, but works out the same.

[carbide]

An artificial human. I never even knew that was possible.

[She's staring again. Sorry?]

[doublelammy]

[It's fine. Millium can stare right back, although it's not a staring contest this time.

She's not so dumb as to try the same thing twice and hope it'll go differently.]

Yeah. World's full of lotsa crazy things.

And you? 'Cause I remember a certain guidebook sayin' some pretty crazy stuff about you.

[carbide]

[Olympia glances around.]

It doesn't say those things anymore.

[doublelammy]

[Suspicious!]

Anymore. But it did, once. Why?

[carbide]

I assume the Sergeant wanted to irritate me.

[She doesn't actually sound irritated.]

[doublelammy]

[Millium is quiet for a moment, studying Olympia with a blank expression.]

...Nope. You're lying.

[She doesn't sound upset about it, though, and her expression doesn't change.]

'Cause it had lots of things in there about me, too. Things I never told Sarge, and were written down before I told anyone myself. And all of those things are true.

So I don't believe that yours is lies just 'cause you say so.

[She shrugs, though, closing her eyes.]

If you don't wanna tell, whatever. Lotsa people have secrets. But don't lie like that – I'm not stupid.

[carbide]

[Dammit. She really thought that would work.]

I didn't strictly lie. No one who wanted to get along with me would put that information there.

[Her expression is completely neutral.]

We can discuss it later. Somewhere private.

[somewhere she can kill her with no witnesses?]

[doublelammy]

[Millium simply shakes her head.]

That's okay.

I don't really care enough for that. Right now, I wanna get along with everyone.

And if being curious means we aren't gonna get along, then I'm not that interested.

[See? She's completely reasonable!]

[carbide]

[The ability to respect others' privacy? This is frankly astonishing. Must be an artificial human thing.]

Very well. We'll leave it there for the time being.

[She points to the plate.]
