Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

Okay so I want to clear something up real fast, since we've got a lot of arguing going on.

[For the most part Hawks has been quiet until now, but time to get this back on track. Bakugou deserves that much.]

You all agree that Bakugou is skilled at hand to hand combat. He'd be hard to get very close to, unless the assailant is also an expert at it. But he has his quirk. He could still create explosions, so he's now essentially a major hazard to get within ten feet of, even with high physical combat skills.

[A pause to let that sink in]

Someone would have to be very good physically and at a distance to have given Bakugou enough trouble to ...end up like this.

Which points to one person in particular just as much as the "arrow wound" does, but the evidence of indecision or a scattershot method points at someone not used to killing.

[vague paternal feelings are a pain in the ass and you can probably tell from the look on his face.]

Or someone who isn't used to the person they're trying to kill being able to cause explosions.

A valid point, but - no, that's a good point. If this was a situation like the last, killing because the alternative is we all find out what happens if we don't, it would make sense for the killer to have prepared for a number of situations, and if they weren't expecting explosions....

If there was an arrow, it wasn't fired from a bow—that's what Kino said, anyway, and he's the only one who got a good look at the body. I'm not gonna waste an arrow trying to stab someone with it.

That's my point - that's why I asked if it looked like someone who didn't know what they were doing might have thought it looked like a killing wound!

Who would that be? Everyone we're looking at has combat in their profile...

Combat, yes, but killing someone you've known, at least in passing... killing is different from fighting.

[He just... makes a little frustrated noise, then.]

I'm not speaking well enough. I don't know if I'm making sense.

Are there any abilities we're overlooking? Sting-san and Olympia-san claim that some of their powers aren't working, but... for example, Keith-san has "half Galra" as a power, and I have no idea what that means.

I'm ... very sorry if this is a sensitive subject. I just have never heard of Galra before.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

We have three people with more or less normal human capability: Keith, Mr. Wayne, and Clarisse.

The other two who have superhuman strength are Miss Olympia and Mr. Eucliffe.

If the person who attacked Bakugo fought back, do any of their abilities match the damage that was done? Especially to the pews and the candlestick.

And if not... We might need to examine their motives and the likelihood of them managing to kill him without getting hurt in spite of all the damage done to the chapel.

We think the candlestick is what caused the wound on Bakugou-san's chest, right? Isn't that what caused it to break, or was there some other reason?

Also, was there an actual candle anywhere?

If the candlestick caused the wound, then maybe the culprit threw it? Like a throwing knife or a javelin.

Mr. Dabi mentioned it, but that would mean they have good aim. It was close to the heart.

I was thinking it was fired like an arrow. That's why it was shallow and why the candlestick was broken in the first place.

Your superhuman strength... well, would it be correct to say it's because of your construction?
