Week 3: Trial

April 20th. It was now time for the trial.

When everyone arrives at the trial room, the tribunes are already filled with townspeople. Compared to last week, there's less morbid curiosity and more quiet outrage. Everyone's glaring at the visitors while they enter the courtroom.

The number of podiums draped in black has increased dramatically. Nine's, Mako's, Sandalphon's, and Bakugou's have joined Moloch's, raising the number to five. That's one sixth of the available podiums. How many more will be covered in black velvet before these two months end?

Once everyone is at the right podium, the Sergeant bangs his gavel. He doesn't seem to be in better mood than before.

"Today the victim is Katsuki Bakugou. Solve it."

Without even bothering to taunt or be as antagonistic as usual, he waves the gavel. Five small photos appear on the podiums.

            

"When it's time, you shall cast your vote. Write it on paper or put the photo inside the slot, I don't really care about how you do it. What matters is that you actually do it. Start your discussion."

The trial room went completely silent, all the visitors can feel the attentive stares of the townspeople gathered to watch. It's up to them now to find the culprit.

Let the trial begin.

Right. I don't think it was the killing blow.

Yeah, that's where the "bad idea" comes in. What if somebody actually tried using it as a projectile? If the culprit really did have to keep their distance, that would be one way of doing it. It would explain why the wound wasn't that deep, too.

...If that's the case, it wouldn't have been Clarisse. She wouldn't have had to send that his way, she already has arrows.

I think it might be the opposite. If she used an arrow, it would be immediately obvious to all of us it was her. And she already said she wouldn't waste an arrow.

A kill shot isn't a waste. [clarISSE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE HELPING] Besides, a wound from a thin-tipped arrow wouldn't be hard to disguise as something else.

It wouldn't be hard, but it would be easier to use something else and not have to disguise it at all, right?

[snideper]

No, it wouldn't. It would be easier to take a target down fast and take your time with the aftermath instead of dealing with half-assed wounds like that.

[robitussin]

He doesn't seem like the kind of person who would go down fast no matter what someone tried, though.

Is there a guarantee it would've been a kill shot?

My arrows don't miss.

[unfashionably]

[ Ignoring her for a second to talk to Kino. ] Hey, Kino? Where was the injury on Bakugou's chest?

An attack that does not miss can still fail to kill. It might be blocked, for example.

I agree. It'd be foolish of someone who doesn't want to get caught to use something that's unique to them only.

[robitussin]

...I guess that's true. Besides, I wouldn't put it past her to try to kill someone with a candlestick.

In the guestbook it says has above average agility, and I think we've been overlooking the fact that agility plays a big part here.

Add to that, "if you give her an object she can probably figure out how to end a life with it" and a mention of fighting in low-vision conditions...

He was pretty fast on his feet. So whoever was after him woulda had to have been, too.

That makes sense to me. 'cause of all the destruction, I think we've been looking at things the wrong way. We got confused and thought "it must be someone strong" thanks to the debris. Maybe we should have been looking for someone fast instead.

...I mean, you also have superhuman speed written on your biography thing, don't you?

I'm fast, but there's no way I was going near that. Like my thing says I'm normal and can't do any of this crazy shit some of you can.

That was a half-assed wound, not a fatal one. If there were all these explosions and all this fire, it would have added some light. I—can't say anything about the agility, I guess, but this is all circumstantial crap.

So was everything against Nine. I wanna point out, too? You're an assassin, if anyone knows how to kill without leaving much of a trace? It's you.

The chest wound might not have been fatal with whatever caused it even if it would have with another weapon, but combining it with his other wounds could have caused Bakugou to die.

[He had a head wound too, which could have knocked him out and caused him to bleed out]

That would probably be a surprise of an attack... Mr. Franciscus said he found blood on the rim of the font.

Do you think it's possible he could have been stabbed and then fell backwards and hit his head? If he was unconscious when he went under...

[Kino will try to remember if the head wound would have matched hitting the rim.]
