Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

This week's special in the diner is lemon pie made with love (and a top-secret recipe)

Amazing... I don't think I've ever heard of a country that has flying machines before.

[This is a game changer.]

Well, only a very basic one. If it's a ship... does that mean it can carry a lot of people at once?

Huh. You haven't? I feel like they're all over Zemuria by now.

[Interesting!]

Yeah. The one we were using during the war, we basically had the entirety of Thors on board by the end of it and it was still pretty roomy.

Amazing...

[Kino is shaken!]

So... you participated in the war?

Yeah.

We basically just went all over the western part of the Empire on the Courageous and helped people out with stuff. Usually stopping the Noble Alliance from ruining everything, y'know, like you do.

[Millium, most places don't have a horrifying caste system like your country does?]

We just wanted to take back Thors, really. So we gathered up all the students that scattered and then came back and fought and took it back!

[YEAH! VICTORY!]

...Oh, and then we beat up Duke Cayenne and his big scary Divine Knight demon thing. That part was pretty awesome.

[Why is this an afterthought.]

[It's cool, it's cool, Kino's seen a lot.]

It sounds like your country's been through a lot. Is it currently in a recovery period?

Yeah, you could say that.

Ever since Gramps came back, we've been cleaning up after the Noble Alliance's messes and then it's right back onto annexing.

I haven't gotten to go on any of those missions, though.

As a spy?

[If it's a mission...]

As an Ironblood, at least, yeah.

They usually send Al off with Rean to help with the annexing. Not me.

[...She sounds disappointed about that.]

What are Ironbloods? And... Al and Rean?

We're Gramps' right-hand peeps. [I hate myself for having just typed that, but here we are.] Gramps is the Chancellor of the Empire. Whatever he wants, we get done.

Al – Altina – She's like me. She's got a puppet just like mine and... well, I guess she's an Ironblood, too. [She doesn't sound so sure on that part, but in her defense, that was kind of a recent development.] Rean's my classm— my friend. He's got this thing called a Divine Knight – it's a really big... um... people keep saying the word "robot"? I think it's what you guys call a robot. But anyway, Gramps sends him in when he wants to annex a country and they don't wanna give in right away.

But like I said, I don't go on those missions, so I don't really know any more than that.

[Ah yes, suppression techniques. Pretty common in the case of countries trying to expand territory like this one so obviously is.]

You have lived a very interesting life, Millium.

Yeah, I guess. Just doin' what I'm told, though.

Yours sounds way more fun. [She looks away, more than a little wistful.] Kinda like it was back at school. Going fun places and learning new things...

I have seen a lot of places. And even if it's hard, it's a lot of fun.

[Kino nods in acknowledgment. She wouldn't want to give up traveling for anything, if she can help it.]

Would you like me to tell you stories about some of the places I've seen? You've already told me a lot about your country.

[Millium lights up.]

Yes, please!!

[She quickly reorients herself, elbows on the table and plopping her chin into her hands as she gazes at Kino expectantly.]

Let's see...

[Kino thinks it over as Millium gets herself settled. And then:]

I'll tell you about the strangest country I've ever visited. I was napping in a forest when the earth began to shake, so I hit the ground thinking something was coming. Well- I was sort of right.

When I looked, a giant machine moving on huge caterpillars was tearing slowly through the forest. I hopped on Hermes, my motorrad, and we followed to see where it went.

It turns out it was a moving country. The people of the country spotted me and asked if I meant to enter as a visitor, and when I said yes, they stopped the country to let me board.

[Millium's eyes are almost as wide as her dessert plate.]

Woah... they made an entire country move? On caterpillars?

[She sounds mystified.]

So— so what was it like once you got in? And what's a motorrad?

A motorrad is a two-wheeled vehicle. They can talk, if you listen to them. Humans and motorrads make pacts for each others' benefit - a motorrad can't move on it's own without someone to give it balance, and a person can't run as fast as a motorrad. So, we work together.

[And with that aside out of the way:]

When we first entered, there was a huge glowing pillar. I was told it was the country's reactor, used to power everything in the city. But since it would overheat if it didn't use up enough energy, they had to keep moving.

Past that... the inside was clean. They had a park for everyone to relax in at the very top where sunlight could reach, and lights for everywhere else. I hear they even recycled all of the water used.

[Which could be gross to some, but Kino didn't much care.]

It was a pleasant, peaceful country. Everyone inside could see the outside on large screens on the walls, to see where traveling.

Woooah! You have a talking orbal bike?!

[Millium knows what a motorcycle is, thanks to Rean, and this is rad.]

That! Is! Awesome!

[She settles down her cheering some to hear out the rest of the story, though, completely enraptured.]

Wow... that sounds like the coolest place ever. I wish I could see something like that someday...

Maybe someday you will. Or even if you don't, maybe you'll see something even more amazing.

The world is a huge and unbelievable place. There's no way you could possibly see everything it has to offer in a single lifetime - no, not even hundreds of lifetimes.

[But that's precisely why Kino so loves to travel and try to see as much as she can.]

Uwaa... how d'you make everything sound so cool when it's so cheesy?

[And that's said absolutely adoringly.]

But... I think you're right, even if it is cheesy when you put it like that. I'll just have to keep looking!

Because it's true.

[And Kino believes in that wholeheartedly.]

Someone like you could probably make it. I hope one day you get to see those sights, too.

[Millium gives a big smile.]

Yeah. Me, too.

But, for now...

[She digs in a pocket to pull out her debit card, tilting her head at Kino.]

Want some pie? It's not nearly as exciting, but it's pretty good, too.

[Millium is going to run this diner out of pie singlehandedly.]

[Like Kino's about to turn down good food.]

I'll have a slice, if you're offering.

[Kino you have your own infinite stock of money surely you can pay for it yourself.]

Oooone sec!

[And Millium is out of the booth and dashing up to the counter in no time flat. If Kino watches, she'll see Millium gesturing back toward her as she orders, and nodding cheerfully in thanks as she receives another slice of pie.

Back to the table!]

Ta-da~!

[Kino does indeed watch, accepting the slice with a nod in gratitude.]
