Peace Week

Sunday must have been exhausting for you, maybe even upsetting. A new town, new faces and a an ominous order from a man without a face... who wouldn't be a little frightened? Hopefully, all of that is forgotten when you climb out from under your blankets this fine Monday. Rise and shine! A new morning is a new start!

If you make your way to the lounge, you will find a few copies of the local newspaper provided for your perusal. Once you go outdoors, you'll find the weather forecast 100% accurate. It's pretty impressive.

It seems that quiet mornings like this are going to be your everyday life now. Maybe you should see this whole stay as a vacation? Go out and explore the town, meet your fellow motel guests and meet the townspeople. They're sure to welcome you with a smile!

Eventually, Kino slides into the seat either next to or across from Millium, depending on if she's chosen a booth or not.]

I think we're at critical shark warning now.

Millium beams around her fork, plucking her pie off of it. She then proceeds to talk with her mouth full of food, like a goddamn lady.]

Ehehe. They shouldn'ta said they were gonna get rid of it! That's basically asking for a curse.

You didn't want them to get rid of the warning?

[Kino's still not sure why the warning's there in the first place, to be honest.]

Nope.

[She swallows.]

The rest of the paper's boring. It's all weather and dumb news I don't care about. The shark warning is fun, even if it doesn't make any sense. Because it doesn't make any sense!

[Well, it's as good a reason as any.]

So you're still finding ways to have fun here.

Mmhm.

What's the point otherwise, y'know? Sitting around being bored is basically worse than being dead.

[Millium giggles, picking up another bite of pie onto her fork.]

I bet.

The book said you're a "traveler." So, what. You get bored of places?

Mm, rather than get bored, it's more like I want to see as much as I can. But to do that, I can't stay in any one place for long.

[Lingering one place means time lost somewhere else.]

[doublelammy]

Huh.

[She pops the bite into her mouth, looking up toward the ceiling thoughtfully.]

...I've been lots of places, but all of them were in the Empire. When you put it like that, it kinda feels limiting.

Where all have you been? All over the world, or...?

[quickpersuader]

[Kino nods.]

That's right. There's times when I even went to the other side of the equator - it's hard to travel when it starts to snow, so I try to travel in places during their warm seasons if I can.

I still haven't seen nearly all there is to see. But I'm glad to have seen everything I have.

Can you tell me more about the Empire? Maybe we can trade stories.

[...Of course Kino's going to be curious.]

[Munch, munch, swallow.]

I guess that makes sense. I know the trains still run in winter, but even then, it's probably easier to get from place to place if you're on an airship or flying on something else.

[There's some tidbits for you, Kino!]

Hmm... well, it's really big. And Gramps is annexing new places all the time. He's trying to get the railroad going all over the country. You can get most places, but there are some places that are a little harder to reach and then you gotta get there on foot from a train stop town.

The Emperor's in charge of everything now more than he was. I mean, he was always in charge, but before, the nobles that run the provinces had a lot more power. They got pretty locked down after the civil war, though.

[Wait wait hold up.]

Your country has flying machines?

[This is legitimately a shock because what the fuck is Kino's Journey technology.]

[doublelammy]

Huh? Yeah.

Airships are pretty common. I mean, you're prolly not gonna get to ride one unless you're rich or workin' with the government somehow, but, yeah.

Amazing... I don't think I've ever heard of a country that has flying machines before.

[This is a game changer.]

Well, only a very basic one. If it's a ship... does that mean it can carry a lot of people at once?

[doublelammy]

Huh. You haven't? I feel like they're all over Zemuria by now.

[Interesting!]

Yeah. The one we were using during the war, we basically had the entirety of Thors on board by the end of it and it was still pretty roomy.

Amazing...

So... you participated in the war?

Yeah.

We basically just went all over the western part of the Empire on the Courageous and helped people out with stuff. Usually stopping the Noble Alliance from ruining everything, y'know, like you do.

[Millium, most places don't have a horrifying caste system like your country does?]

We just wanted to take back Thors, really. So we gathered up all the students that scattered and then came back and fought and took it back!

[YEAH! VICTORY!]

...Oh, and then we beat up Duke Cayenne and his big scary Divine Knight demon thing. That part was pretty awesome.

[Why is this an afterthought.]

[It's cool, it's cool, Kino's seen a lot.]

It sounds like your country's been through a lot. Is it currently in a recovery period?

[doublelammy]

Yeah, you could say that.

Ever since Gramps came back, we've been cleaning up after the Noble Alliance's messes and then it's right back onto annexing.

I haven't gotten to go on any of those missions, though.

As a spy?

As an Ironblood, at least, yeah.

They usually send Al off with Rean to help with the annexing. Not me.

[...She sounds disappointed about that.]

We're Gramps' right-hand peeps. [I hate myself for having just typed that, but here we are.] Gramps is the Chancellor of the Empire. Whatever he wants, we get done.

Al – Altina – She's like me. She's got a puppet just like mine and... well, I guess she's an Ironblood, too. [She doesn't sound so sure on that part, but in her defense, that was kind of a recent development.] Rean's my classm— my friend. He's got this thing called a Divine Knight – it's a really big... um... people keep saying the word "robot"? I think it's what you guys call a robot. But anyway, Gramps sends him in when he wants to annex a country and they don't wanna give in right away.

But like I said, I don't go on those missions, so I don't really know any more than that.

[Ah yes, suppression techniques. Pretty common in the case of countries trying to expand territory like this one so obviously is.]
